TO PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE U.S. ARMY HERITAGE AND EDUCATION CENTER (USAHEC) AND ITS PROGRAMS AND TO SUSTAIN AND ENHANCE THE CENTER'S AND THE FOUNDATION'S ABILITY TO INFORM AND EDUCATE THE AMERICAN PUBLIC ON THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF SOLDIERS AND THE U.S. ARMY TO OUR NATION.
SUSTAINING OPERATIONS-THE ARMY HERITAGE CENTER FOUNDATION SUCCESSFULLY SUSTAINED OPERATIONS IN A COVID ENVIRONMENT. THE YEAR SAW OFFICE STAFF WORKING REMOTELY FROM MARCH TO JULY 2020, THE FOUNDATION'S ARMY BIRTHDAY AND MEMBERSHIP DINNERS CANCELLED, PUBLIC PROGRAMS AT THE U.S. ARMY HERITAGE AND EDUCATION CENTER (USAHEC) SUSPENDED, DEVELOPMENT STAFFS' ACCESS TO SUPPORTERS AND DONORS CURTAILED, AND THE CLOSING OF THE CENTER'S GALLERIES AND THE FOUNDATION'S MUSEUM STORE FOR MORE THAN SIX MONTHS IN RESPONSE TO STATE AND FEDERAL HEALTH DIRECTIVES. THE FOUNDATION RESPONSE TO THIS ENVIRONMENT WAS TO TRANSITION PROGRAMS TO A VIRTUAL/ONLINE ENVIRONMENT AND INCREASED USE OF WEB-BASED PROGRAMS.IN JUNE, THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS COMPLETED AND APPROVED A STRATEGIC PLAN TO CARRY THE FOUNDATION THROUGH THE NEXT FIVE TO SIX YEARS. THE PLAN SEEKS TO GROW THE USAHEC CAMPUS; USAHEC AND THE FOUNDATION PROGRAMS; STABILIZE AND BUILD FLEXIBLY IN THE BUDGET, AND ENHANCE BOARD MEMBERSHIP AND DIVERSITY.TO ENHANCE OUTREACH THAT WILL SUSTAIN THE FOUNDATION EFFORTS TO PROVIDE SUPPORT THE ARMY, TO GROW FOUNDATION PROGRAMS AND TO IMPROVE THE REACH OF THE FOUNDATION'S MUSEUM STORE, THE STAFF RESTRUCTURED AND REBUILT THE WEBSITE TO MORE CONSISTENTLY TELL THE STORY OF THE FOUNDATION AND ITS MISSION.
SUPPORT TO THE U.S. ARMY-THE ARMY HERITAGE CENTER FOUNDATION CONTINUED ITS EFFORTS IN 2020 TO SUPPORT THE U.S. ARMY BY ADVANCING THE DEVELOPMENT OF USAHEC; PROMOTING THE CENTER AS A MAJOR RESEARCH CENTER; AND ENHANCING ITS COLLECTIONS, PROGRAMS, AND OUTREACH. IN 2020, THE FOUNDATION EXPENDED $180,618 TO SUPPORT THESE OBJECTIVES. THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN THAT WILL SUPPORT THE FUTURE EXPANSION OF THE HALL OF THE AMERICAN SOLDIER - A 30,000 SQUARE FOOT, $14 MILLION EXPANSION, WAS SIGNIFICANTLY CURTAILED AS DONORS' COVID- RELATED CONCERNS AND TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS LIMITED IN PERSON CONVERSATIONS. HOWEVER, EFFORTS TO SUPPORT USAHEC EXPANSION CONTINUED AS THE FOUNDATION COMPLETED CONSTRUCTION OF THE EVENT PAVILION ON THE CAMPUS AND INITIATED THE REVISION OF ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS TO MEET CURRENT ARMY NEEDS FOR THE FUTURE EXPANSION OF THE HALL OF THE AMERICAN SOLDIER. WHILE IN PERSON RESEARCH WAS SEVERELY LIMITED DURING THE PERIOD OF MARCH THROUGH OCTOBER, 2020, USING OUR WEBSITE, EMAIL BLASTS, AND FACEBOOK RESOURCES, THE FOUNDATION PROMOTED USAHEC'S ONLINE CAPACITIES AND ITS ONLINE LECTURES AND PROGRAMS. THE FOUNDATION'S ACTIVE ROLE WORKING WITH POTENTIAL DONORS OF ARTIFACT, MANUSCRIPT, AND LIBRARY COLLECTIONS WAS MAINTAINED. IN 2020, THE FOUNDATION FACILITATED MORE THAN 110 IN-KIND DONATIONS TOTALING $40,951.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS-THE FOUNDATION'S EDUCATION PROGRAMS CONTINUED TO PROMOTE THE USE OF USAHEC'S COLLECTIONS, THE STUDY OF HISTORY, AND OUTREACH TO STUDENTS, TEACHERS, AND MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC ON A LOCAL, REGIONAL, AND NATIONAL BASIS. THE FOUNDATION EXPENDED $131,827 ON THESE INITIATIVES.FOR 2020, THE FOUNDATION'S MANAGEMENT OF THE NATIONAL HISTORY DAY IN PENNSYLVANIA (NHD IN PA) PROGRAM EVOLVED AS AN ONLINE EVENT. IN EARLY MARCH 2020, COVID RESTRICTION RAISED THE POTENTIAL OF THE PROGRAM'S CANCELLATION. HOWEVER, FOUNDATION STAFF WORKING WITH OUR PARTNERS RETOOLED THE ONSITE CONTESTS REGIONAL AND STATE - TO A VIRTUAL PROGRAM IN A MATTER OF WEEKS. THE VIRTUAL CONTEST AT THE STATE LEVEL SUPPORTED MORE THAN 685 STUDENTS AND STUDENT TEAMS AND RESULTED IN 63 ATTENDING THE NATIONAL CONTEST. AS A COMPONENT OF NATIONAL HISTORY DAY, THE STAFF ALSO CONTINUED ITS QUARTERLY TEACHER WORKSHOP PROGRAM IN 2020 AND ITS EFFORTS TO BUILD A COLLECTION OF SOLDIER STORIES ON THE FOUNDATION'S WEBSITE THAT ARE AVAILABLE AT NO COST TO USERS. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, THE EDUCATION PROGRAM CONTINUED TO MAINTAIN ITS INTERACTION WITH VETERANS AND STUDENTS. OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH CUMBERLAND VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL CONTINUED, AND IN 2020, WE PAIRED 6 STUDENTS AND 5 VETERANS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE VETERANS ORAL HISTORY PROGRAM. THE VETERANS' CAFE THAT BRINGS VETERANS OF ALL SERVICES AND ERAS TOGETHER TO ENJOY A MEAL TOGETHER AND SHARE STORIES OF SERVICE CONTINUED TO GROW. IN 2020, 2 VETERANS CAFE PHYSICAL ON-SITE PROGRAMS WERE CONDUCTED IN CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA PRIOR TO COVID RESTRICTIONS, AND 5 PROGRAMS WERE CONDUCTED VIRTUALLY DURING COVID RESTRICTIONS. FINALLY, THE FOUNDATION'S SOLDIER EXPERIENCE HISTORY SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM CONTINUED AND IN 2020, 48 CAMPERS PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM.
