Organizations Filed Purposes:
The Nurture Nature Center is a science-based organization that focuses on how to engage people in thinking critically about environmental risk topics in their communities. Locally, NNC offers a variety of exhibits and associated activities that combine science, art and community dialogue to help achieve this end. NNC was founded in the wake of major flooding in the region, and a significant focus of its work since inception has been on how to best communicate risks relating to climate change and flooding. NNC's research and outreach in this area has been disseminated nationwide.

AN IMPORTANT FOCUS OF NNC'S WORK IS ON CONDUCTING RESEARCH ABOUT HOW TO BEST COMMUNICATE RISKS RELATING TO FLOODING AND RELATED ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS, AND ON PUTTING THE RESEARCH INTO PRACTICE THROUGH EFFECTIVE OUTREACH. NNC'S WORK IN THIS AREA INCLUDES DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNICATION MATERIALS DESIGNED TO IMPROVE THE LIKELIHOOD OF PROPER RESPONSES TO INFORMATION ABOUT FLOOD RISKS. IN 2019, NNC CONTINUED ITS RESEARCH ON HOW VARIOUS AUDIENCES USE AND UNDERSTAND PROBABILISTIC HYDROLOGIC FORECAST INFORMATION, WHICH WILL HELP GUIDE THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ON HOW TO MOST EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE SUCH INFORMATION TO THE PUBLIC.
NNC OFFERS THE PUBLIC EXHIBITS AND ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO FOSTER DIALOGUE ON ENVIRONMENTAL RISK TOPICS. THE EXHIBITS INCLUDE NOAA' S ACCLAIMED "SCIENCE ON A SPHERE," A ROOM SIZED GLOBAL DISPLAY SYSTEM USED TO ILLUSTRATE EARTH SYSTEM SCIENCE TO ALL AGES; AN SOS EXPLORER TOUCH SCREEN KIOSK; AN INTERACTIVE WATERSHED EXHIBIT; AND A HUGE LIVING LOCAL MURAL INCORPORATING 80 ENVIRONMENTAL TALKING POINTS. NNC'S ACTIVITIES INCLUDE SPEAKING EVENTS/DOCUMENTARY FILMS/WORKSHOPS/ART SHOWS/FOCUS GROUPS & CLASSES ON A RANGE OF ISSUES, INCLUDING URBAN GARDENING. IN 2019, NNCS WORK INCLUDED OUTREACH UNDER ITS CREATE RESILIENCE PROJECT, FUNDED BY NOAA, WHICH IS DESIGNED TO ENGAGE RURAL, URBAN AND SUBURBAN RESIDENTS IN THE LEHIGH VALLEY WITH THE TWIN GOALS OF IMPROVING ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS LITERACY, AND INCREASING ENGAGEMENT IN RESILIENCY ACTIONS BY YOUTH AND ADULTS IN THE REGION.
NNC ADMINISTERS THE BUY FRESH BUY LOCAL PROGRAM FOR THE LEHIGH VALLEY (BFBL-GLV) WHICH IS DESIGNED TO EDUCATE CONSUMERS IN THE LEHIGH, NORTHAMPTON AND BERKS COUNTIES ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF HEALTHY, LOCALLY-GROWN FOODS, WHILE SUPPORTING THE FARMERS AND LANDS THAT PRODUCE THEM. BFBL'S WORK ALSO SEEKS TO IMPROVE FOOD ACCESS FOR LOW INCOME NEIGHBORHOODS AND IMPROVE THE INFRASTRUCTURE FOR THE LOCAL FOOD ECONOMY. NNC RECEIVED FUNDING DURING 2018 FROM THE DEPT OF AGRICUTURE'S FINI AND FMPP PROGRAMS, AS WELL AS STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES AND SEVERAL NONPROFITS, TO SUPPORT THIS WORK.
