Organizations Filed Purposes: SERI WORKS TO CREATE A WORLD WHERE ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS ARE REUSED AND RECYCLED IN A WAY THAT PROMOTES RESOURCE PRESERVATION; THE WELL-BEING OF THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT; AND THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF WORKERS AND COMMUNITIES.

SUSTAINABLE ELECTRONICS RECYCLING INTERNATIONAL (SERI) ADMINISTERS THE "THE SUSTAINABLE ELECTRONICS REUSE AND RECYCLE (R2)STANDARD" AS THE PRIMARY TOOL FOR ACHIEVING ITS MISSION. THIS STANDARD PROMOTES BEST INDUSTRY PRACTICES RELATING TO THE ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH, AND SAFETY IN THE USED ELECTRONICS REUSE AND RECYCLING INDUSTRY. IN 2019, SERI MAINTAINED THE R2 STANDARD AND CERTIFICATION PROGRAM, WHILE FACILITATING THE NEXT REVISION TO THE STANDARD BY A MULTI-STAKEHOLDER CONSENSUS BODY THAT IS CHARGED WITH REVISING THE R2 STANDARD TO ASSURE IT ADDRESSES ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGY AND PRACTICES FOR PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT AND WORKER HEALTH AND SAFETY; AND IMPLEMENTING QUALITY CONTROL MEASURES TO HELP ASSURE CONFORMITY WITH THE STANDARD BY ELECTRONICS RECYCLERS. (65%)

SERI CONDUCTS EDUCATION AND OUTREACH ACTIVITIES TO PROMOTE ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE REUSE AND RECYCLING OF ELECTRONICS. IN 2019, SERI TRAVELED TO NUMEROUS CONFERENCES TO TEACH ABOUT THE RISKS OF IMPROPER DISPOSAL AND THE BENEFITS OF A CIRCULAR ECONOMY FOR ELECTRONICS REUSE AND RECYCLING. SERI ALSO PARTICIPATED IN WEBINARS, COMMUNICATED WITH STAKEHOLDERS THROUGH NEWSLETTERS (3,600+ RECIPIENTS) AND SOCIAL MEDIA (1,800+ FOLLOWERS), AND HELD SIX AUDITOR TRAINING CLASSES WITH 58 PARTICIPANTS. (25%)

SERI ENGAGES IN ACTIVITIES AIMED AT BUILDING THE CAPACITY OF ELECTRONICS REFURBISHERS AND RECYCLERS TO RESPONSIBLY MANAGE THE EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS THEY PROCESS, SPECIFICALLY THOSE THAT ARE CURRENTLY MANAGING ELECTRONICS IN A MANNER THAT IS DETRIMENTAL TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND/OR HUMAN HEALTH. THIS WORK INCLUDES: IDENTIFYING GEOGRAPHICAL AREAS AROUND THE WORLD WHERE ELECTRONICS RECYCLING IS BEING PERFORMED WITHOUT (OR WITH LIMITED) ENVIRONMENTAL OR WORKER SAFETY PRACTICES; CONDUCTING GAP ANALYSES TO DETERMINE WHICH BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ARE MISSING; AND PROVIDING TRAINING TO THE ELECTRONICS RECYCLERS ON SUSTAINABLE AND RESPONSIBLE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES.
