Organizations Filed Purposes: PENNSYLVANIA ACADEMY OF OPHTHALMOLOGY WAS INCORPORATED AS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION IN SEPTEMBER 1990. THE ACADEMY'S PURPOSE IS TO ACT AS THE VOICE OF OPHTHALMOLOGIC MEDICINE IN PENNSYLVANIA; TO FOSTER AMONG ITS MEMBERS THE PROVISION OF THEIR TALENTS, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILL OR THE BENEFIT OF THE PUBLIC; TO SERVE AS A PATIENT ADVOCATE IN PROMOTING PREVENTIVE EYE CARE; AND TO ADVANCE THE KNOWLEDGE, SCIENCE, AND PRACTICE OF OPHTHALMOLOGY.

THE PAO FULFILLS ITS MISSION BY PROVIDING EDUCATION FOR DOCTORS AND THEIR STAFF, BY ADVOCATING FOR OPHTHALMOLOGISTS AND THEIR PATIENTS IN THE STATE LEGISLATURE, AND PROMOTING PREVENTATIVE EYE CARE TO THE CITIZENS OF PENNSYLVANIA. ACTIVITIES THAT SUPPORT THIS MISSION INCLUDE: 1. PAO, WITH THE HELP OF THEIR GOVERNMENT RELATIONS FIRM, PROVIDED INPUT INTO HB 2561 THAT AMENDED THE OPTOMETRIC SCOPE OF PRACTICE TO ENSURE PATIENT SAFETY BY PREVENTING OPTOMETRIC EXPANSION INTO EYE SURGERY AND PROTECT PENNSYLVANIA OPHTHALMOLOGISTS FROM ENCROACHMENT ON THEIR PRACTICES. HB 2561 PASSED AND WAS SIGNED INTO LAW IN 2020. ADDITIONALLY, PAO SUPPORTED HB 1342 PEDIATRIC VISION SCREENING WHICH PROVIDES FOR VISION SCREENING REQUIREMENTS ON ENTRY TO KINDERGARTEN AND THROUGH SCHOOL YEARS. IT TOO WAS SIGNED INTO LAW IN 2020. 2. PAO HOSTED A SERIES OF INFORMATIONAL WEBINARS FOR MEMBERS ON COPING WITH THE 2020 COVID-19 PANDEMIC INCLUDING TELEMEDICINE, COVID-19 EMPLOYMENT PRACTICES AND OSHA REGULATION DURING COVID-19. PAO'S YOUNG OPHTHALMOLOGISTS COMMITTEES SPONSORED 2 WEBINARS FOR EARLY CAREER OPHTHALMOLOGISTS THAT WERE OPEN TO THE FULL MEMBERSHIP ON "CHOOSING YOUR CAREER PATH IN OPHTHALMOLOGY- AND "NEGOTIATING YOUR FIRST EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT." A MINIMALLY INVASIVE GLAUCOMA SURGERY (MIGS) WEBINAR WAS ALSO OFFERED TO MEMBERS. 3. PAO SPONSORED SEVERAL EDUCATIONAL WEBINARS FOR CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION (CME) CREDITS FREE TO MEMBERS. OUR MEDICAL CODING SEMINAR BECAME A VIRTUAL EVENT WITH 100 ATTENDEES. THE THYROID EYE DISEASE CONFERENCE, ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED AS AN IN-PERSON EVENT, WAS ALSO HELD VIRTUALLY AND ATTRACTED 150 PARTICIPANTS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND FROM SEVERAL COUNTRIES AND PROVIDED 4.5 HOURS OF CME. 4. PAO PUBLISHED ONLY 1 PRINT NEWSLETTER IN 2020 DUE TO THE RAPIDLY CHANGING INFORMATION DURING THE PANDEMIC AND PUBLISHED 6 DIGITAL NEWSLETTERS AS WELL AS OVER 150 INFORMATIONAL E-BLASTS TO THE MEMBERS ON TOPICS OF COVID-19 CARES ACT, PPP, STATE FUNDING PROGRAMS, SAFETY PROTOCOLS FOR OPHTHALMOLOGISTS, PATIENTS AND STAFF, INLCUDING SOURCING PPE AND LOCATING VACCINES AS WELL AS MEDICAL CODING AND REIMBURSEMENTS, MEDICAL LICENSE RENEWALS AND ADVOCACY AT THE STATE LEVEL.
