The West Penn District Men own and operate a summer camp (9-10 weeks) and retreat center (30-35 yearly retreats) in central PA providing churches and para-churches (non-profits) a facility to guide and challenge youth and adults to live righteous, useful, Christ-centered lives.
The West Penn District Men own and operate a summer camp (9-10 weeks) and retreat center (30-35 yearly retreats) in central PA providing churches and para-churches (non-profits) a facility to guide and challenge youth and adults to live righteous, useful, Christ-centered lives. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, several of our retreat groups and all of our week-long summer camps were canceled for 2020. This lowered the number of people benefited by this primary program service substantially. 2,667 people benefited in 2019, while 1,388 benefited in 2020. Retreat groups will continue to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in the early months of 2021, however we forecast that retreats and summer camp programs will resume at roughly pre-pandemic levels after the early part of 2021.
The men provide a summer store for six of the 9-10 weeks of summer camp to provide replacement of forgotten or lost items, snacks, and t-shirts. We use the store time for counselors to interact and develop relationships with campers. Some of the best interaction happens over a popscicle! The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused all of our week-long summer camps to be canceled. This caused the impact, expenses, and revenue of this program service to be greatly reduced. We forecast that this program service will resume at roughly pre-pandemic levels in 2021.
