SOLEBURY SCHOOL IS A PRIVATE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 9 THROUGH 12.
SOLEBURY SCHOOL OPERATES ON A TRIMESTER SYSTEM WITH ADDITIONAL EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION AND ACADEMIC PROGRAMS DURING THE TWO WEEKS OF SPRING BREAK AND OVER THE SUMMER (INCLUDING GLOBAL EDUCATION AND TRAVEL). IN FY2020 THE SCHOOL ENROLLED 228 STUDENTS (9TH GRADE: 47, 10TH GRADE: 55, 11TH GRADE: 61, 12TH GRADE: 65). OF THOSE STUDENTS, 82 WERE BOARDING STUDENTS AND 146 WERE DAY STUDENTS. THE STUDENT BODY CAME FROM 6 COUNTRIES AND 15 STATES, AND OUR 2020 GRADUATES WENT ON TO ATTEND 46 DIFFERENT COLLEGES IN 19 STATES AND 3 COUNTRIES (A 100% PLACEMENT RATE). CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O.SOLEBURY SCHOOL ADDRESSED THE REALITY OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC FROM THE FIRST EARLY INDICATORS THAT WE MIGHT BE FACING A GLOBAL PANDEMIC BY FORMING A COVID-19 TASK FORCE ON JANUARY 27, 2020. WE REASSURED OUR FACULTY AND STAFF THAT WE WERE GOING TO SUSTAIN EMPLOYMENT THROUGHOUT THE PANDEMIC - NO LAYOFFS - WELL BEFORE THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF A FEDERAL PROGRAM AIMED AT PROTECTING JOBS (THE PAYROLL PROTECTION PROGRAM (PPP) OF THE CORONAVIRUS AID, RELIEF, AND ECONOMIC SECURITY (CARES) ACT. (WE DID APPLY FOR AND RECEIVE A PPP LOAN WHICH WAS SPENT 100% ON EMPLOYEE COMPENSATION/BENEFITS.) WHEN WE CLOSED IN MARCH 2020, THE SCHOOL MADE THE SHIFT TO 100% ONLINE EDUCATION WHILE MAINTAINING OUR BOARDING PROGRAM BECAUSE WE HAD INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS WHO WERE PREVENTED FROM GOING HOME BY TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS. WE ADDED STAFF TO SUPPORT THE CONTINUANCE OF THE RESIDENTIAL LIFE PROGRAM AND THE DINING PROGRAM. WE WERE ABLE TO IMPLEMENT HYBRID LEARNING WHICH ALLOWED OUR FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS TO MAKE INDIVIDUAL DECISIONS ABOUT BEING ON CAMPUS OR AT HOME FOR FY2021. THE FINANCIAL COST TO THE SCHOOL OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC HAS BEEN SIGNIFICANT - PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT, TECHNOLOGY INVESTMENTS (LAPTOPS, MONITORS, SMARTBOARDS, MICROPHONES AND CAMERAS), TRAINING INVESTMENTS (WE OFFERED NO ONLINE COURSES PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC SO WE GAVE OUR TEACHERS FULL ACCESS TO TRAINING IN HOW TO BE EFFECTIVE ONLINE OR HYBRID), FURNITURE, PLEXIGLAS, BIODEGRADABLE FOOD CONTAINERS, PORTABLE AIR FILTRATION SYSTEMS, OUTDOOR CLASSROOMS, RESIDENTIAL ISOLATION UNITS, VIRUS TESTING, ETC. DESPITE THE PANDEMIC, THE SCHOOL MAINTAINED ITS ENROLLMENT INTO FY2021 USING VIRTUAL OPEN HOUSES, TOURS, ADMITTED STUDENT EVENTS, VIRTUAL CAMPUS ACTIVITIES, VIRTUAL FAIRS (INTERNATIONAL AND DOMESTIC). THESE ADMISSIONS/RECRUITMENT EFFORTS WERE IMPORTANT, BUT WHAT REALLY ENABLED US TO SUCCEED WERE THE INVESTMENTS MADE AND THE WORK DONE TO PROTECT OUR COMMUNITY AND CONTINUE DELIVERING THE HIGH QUALITY EDUCATION THAT OUR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES EXPECTED FROM SOLEBURY SCHOOL. IN ADDITION, WE EXPANDED OUR ALREADY EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAM TO ENSURE OUR EMPLOYEES, STUDENTS, AND FAMILIES HAD FULL INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT WE WERE DOING AND WHY.
