Organizations Filed Purposes: PITTSBURGH BOTANIC GARDEN INSPIRES PEOPLE TO VALUE PLANTS, GARDEN DESIGN AND THE NATURAL WORLD BY CULTIVATING PLANT COLLECTIONS OF THE ALLEGHENY PLATEAU AND TEMPERATE REGIONS, CREATING DISPLAY GARDENS, CONDUCTING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND CONSERVING THE ENVIRONMENT.

OPERATIONS: PITTSBURGH BOTANIC GARDEN HAS 460 ACRES LOCATED TEN MILES FROM DOWNTOWN; 60 ACRES OPENED TO THE PUBLIC IN 2015. FEATURES INCLUDE A RENOVATED 1800'S BARN WHICH SERVES AS A WELCOME CENTER, A NEW HILLSIDE POLLINATOR GARDEN AT THE ENTRANCE, A CELEBRATION GARDEN AND PATIO FOR EVENTS, A DOGWOOD MEADOW, THE ASIAN POND, THE JAPANESE GARDEN, AN HISTORIC HOMESTEAD, AND 3 MILES OF PATHS REPLANTED WITH NATIVE TREES, SHRUBS AND PLANTS. IN 2019, 41,332 PEOPLE VISITED THE GARDEN, REGISTERED FOR CLASSES, WORKSHOPS AND FIELD TRIPS, OR ATTENDED AN EVENT. PROGRESS IN OUR FIRST 4 YEARS HAS BEEN SIGNIFICANT- MEMBERSHIP GROWTH ACCELERATING, VISITORS GROWING BY DOUBLE DIGIT PERCENTAGES YEAR ON YEAR, PRIVATE RENTALS FILLING ALL AVAILABLE WEEKEND DATES FOR 3 STRAIGHT YEARS, AND INCREASING PARTICIPATION IN EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS.

EDUCATION: PITTSBURGH BOTANIC GARDEN CONTINUES TO GROW ITS EDUCATION AND OUTREACH EFFORTS, CONSIDERED TO BE A CRITICAL GOAL OF ITS MISSION. IN 2019 OUR REACH INCREASED OVER 40% AND GRANTS FUNDED THE MAJORITY OF OUR PROGRAMMING. THIS INCLUDED SCHOOL AND YOUTH GROUP FIELD TRIPS; OUTREACH PROGRAMS AT LOCAL SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES; NATURE BASED, HANDS-ON EXPERIENCES FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES VISITING THE GARDEN; AND WORKSHOPS, CLASSES AND LECTURES FOR ADULTS. 3,313 ATTENDED. PARTICIPANTS RANGED FROM PRESCHOOLERS TO SENIORS AND INCLUDED UNDER-SERVED COMMUNITIES AND INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES. TOPICS ARE SELECTED TO ATTRACT VISITORS AND INSPIRE THEIR INTEREST IN NATURE, BOTANY, GARDENING, LANDSCAPING, PLANT CARE, NATURE ART, AND SUSTAINABILITY.

RECLAMATION & BUILDING THE GARDEN: DURING 2019, $3,236,100 IN BUILDING AND DEVELOPMENT EXPENSES WERE CAPITALIZED. SITE RECLAMATION EFFORTS ADDRESS PROBLEMS CAUSED BY ABANDONED COAL MINES AND RESULTANT ACID MINE DRAINAGE. THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION'S ABANDONED MINE LAND ECONOMIC REVITALIZATION PROGRAM HAS ENABLED CLEANUP OF THE ACID MINE DRAINAGE AND REMOVAL OF RESIDUAL MINING INDUSTRY HAZARDS. REFORESTATION EFFORTS ARE AIMED AT RE-ESTABLISHING WOODLAND HABITATS AND ELIMINATION OF INVASIVE SPECIES.CONSTRUCTION OF THE HILLSIDE POLLINATOR GARDEN BEGAN IN 2018. DESIGNS FOR THE $1.7MM GARDEN OF THE 5 SENSES AND THE NEW $7.5MM WELCOME CENTER & AUTO GARDEN, WERE APPROVED. FUNDING IS 90% COMPLETE. WORK WILL COMMENCE IN 2020.
