DEDICATED TO CREATING A MUSEUM WITHOUT WALLS THAT INFORMS, ENGAGES AND INSPIRES DIVERSE AUDIENCES, THE APA ADVANCES OPPORTUNITIES FOR ARTISTS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE CITY'S PLACES AND SPACES. ACQUIRE AND COMMISSION PUBLIC ART: THE ASSOCIATION FOR PUBLIC ART IS DEDICATED TO CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ARTISTS TO RESPOND TO THE ISSUES OF OUR TIME, WHILE REDEFINING PUBLIC SPACE AND ENCOURAGING PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT AND INTERACTION. A RECIPIENT OF THE NATIONAL PUBLIC ART NETWORK AWARD FROM THE AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS (AFTA), THE APA WAS RECOGNIZED FOR ITS INNOVATIVE CONTRIBUTIONS, EXEMPLARY COMMITMENT, AND LEADERSHIP IN PUBLIC ART. PROJECTS CARRIED OUT IN FY2019 INCLUDED THE RELOCATION OF LOUISE NEVELSON'S "ATMOSPHERE AND ENVIRONMENT XII AND SIR JACOB EPSTEIN'S "SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS," GROUNDBREAKING FOR MAJA PARK, "ELLEN PHILLIPS SAMUEL MEMORIAL" FOUNTAINS STUDY, AND 150TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION PLANNING:NEVELSON AND EPSTEIN SCULPTURE RE-INSTALLATIONS: DURING FY2019, THE APA OVERSAW THE LONG-TERM LOAN (99 YEARS), CONSERVATION TREATMENT, RELOCATION, AND RE-INSTALLATION OF APA'S MONUMENTAL SCULPTURES "ATMOSPHERE AND ENVIRONMENT XII" (1970) BY LOUISE NEVELSON AND "SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS" (1954) BY SIR JACOB EPSTEIN FROM THE PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART'S WEST ENTRANCE TO THE CAMPUS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA. DUE TO EXTENSIVE RENOVATIONS AT THE MUSEUM THE ARTWORKS WERE REMOVED FROM THAT LOCATION AND REINSTALLED AT PUBLIC SITES AT THE UNIVERSITY IN JULY 2019. AS THE ART MUSEUM LOCATION WAS HISTORICALLY CONSIDERED TEMPORARY, THE APA TOOK THE OPPORTUNITY TO RECONSIDER THE PLACEMENT AND CONTEXT OF THESE IMPORTANT SCULPTURES SO THEY COULD BE SEEN TO THEIR BEST ADVANTAGE AND REMAIN ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC. CONSERVATION TREATMENT TO "SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS" INCLUDED RE-GILDING OF THE ENGRAVED TEXT ON THE BASE, NEW BRONZE PIN REPLACEMENTS, AND THE APPLICATION OF A PROTECTIVE WAX COATING THAT HELPED UNIFY THE SURFACE AESTHETICALLY. A SCULPTURE INSTALLATION CELEBRATION EVENT SPONSORED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA WAS HELD AT THE ARTHUR ROSS GALLERY IN SEPTEMBER 2019, FEATURING REMARKS BY MARIA NEVELSON (HEAD OF LOUISE NEVELSON FOUNDATION), AND WALKING TOURS TO THE SCULPTURES AT THEIR NEW LOCATIONS.MAJA PARK GROUNDBREAKING: THE APA COLLABORATED WITH PHILADELPHIA PARKS AND RECREATION ON THE DESIGN OF A NEW URBAN PARK NEAR PARK TOWNE PLACE ON THE BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PARKWAY TO FEATURE THE SCULPTURE "MAJA" (1942) BY GERMAN ARTIST GERHARD MARCKS. THE APA PURCHASED THE SCULPTURE IN 1949 FROM ITS 3RD SCULPTURE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION AT THE PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART. THE SCULPTURE STOOD ON THE MUSEUM'S EAST TERRACE UNTIL 1992, WHEN IT WAS PUT INTO STORAGE. MARCKS WORK WAS DECLARED "DEGENERATE" BY THE NAZIS, WHO BARRED HIM FROM EXHIBITING, AND DESTROYED MANY OF HIS SCULPTURES. DESPITE SUCH ADVERSITY, HE CONTINUED TO WORK, AND THE GERHARD MARCKS HOUSE MUSEUM WAS LATER FOUNDED IN BREMEN, GERMANY. A GROUNDBREAKING FOR MAJA PARK WAS HELD IN OCTOBER 2019, WHERE MAYOR KENNEY OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED THE PARK IS TO BE NAMED AFTER THE SCULPTURE. PLANNING CONTINUES FOR THE CONSERVATION TREATMENT, RELOCATION, AND REINSTALLATION OF THE SCULPTURE SCHEDULED FOR FALL 2020. "ELLEN PHILLIPS SAMUEL MEMORIAL" FOUNTAINS STUDY: THE APA COLLABORATED WITH THE FAIRMOUNT PARK CONSERVANCY AND PHILADELPHIA PARKS AND RECREATION ON A MECHANICAL/ENGINEERING/PLUMBING STUDY BY URBAN ENGINEERS FOR DESIGN SERVICES TO ACTIVATE THE TWO NON-FUNCTIONING FOUNTAINS AT THE ELLEN PHILLIPS SAMUEL MEMORIAL. THE REPORT WAS COMPLETED IN NOVEMBER 2018, AND PLANNING CONTINUES FOR FUNDRAISING AND IMPLEMENTATION.150TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION PLANNING: THE APA IS DEVELOPING PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS IN CELEBRATION OF ITS 150TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2022, TO ALIGN WITH APA'S STRATEGIC PLAN AND BUILD ON ITS LONGEVITY, CREATIVITY, AND EXPERIENCE RELATED TO THE FOUR MISSION-DRIVEN AREAS OF ACQUIRING AND COMMISSIONING, PRESERVING, PROMOTING, AND INTERPRETING PUBLIC ART IN PHILADELPHIA. PLANS INCLUDE A MAJOR NEW COMMISSION FOR PHILADELPHIA.

PRESERVE PUBLIC ART: THE APA'S COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT AGENDA FOR 2019 INCLUDED OUTDOOR SCULPTURE CONSERVATION, SPECIAL CONSERVATION TREATMENTS, SCULPTURE LIGHTING ASSESSMENT AND SIGNAGE SURVEY, CONSERVATION PLANNING FOR "LAW, PROSPERITY AND POWER, AND LANDSCAPE CONSERVATION.OUTDOOR SCULPTURE CONSERVATION: THE APA'S ANNUAL OUTDOOR SCULPTURE CONSERVATION PROGRAM IS THE LONGEST CONTINUOUSLY OPERATING OUTDOOR SCULPTURE CONSERVATION PROGRAM IN THE NATION. DURING FY2019 OVER 30 BRONZE AND MARBLE SCULPTURES OF HISTORIC AND ARTISTIC SIGNIFICANCE RECEIVED TREATMENT. THE SCULPTURES WERE INSPECTED, CLEANED, AND STABILIZED TO PROTECT THEM FROM FURTHER DETERIORATION. SPECIAL CONSERVATION TREATMENTS: SPECIAL TREATMENTS INCLUDED REPLACING MISSING BENCH SLATS FOR JOHN KINDNESS' "THE LABOR MONUMENT" IN SOUTHWEST PHILADELPHIA, AND TREATING WOODEN WORKS "EMBODYING THOREAU" BY ED LEVINE AND "PAVILION IN THE TREES" BY MARTIN PURYEAR FOR INSECTS AND WOOD ROT, AND REPLACING FLOOR JOISTS AND BOARDS. AS PART OF OUR STEWARDSHIP, ONGOING MAINTENANCE EMERGENCIES - INCLUDING STORM DAMAGE, VANDALISM, AND GRAFFITI - WERE ALSO ADDRESSED. DUE TO THE FAILURE OF A WATER PIPE IN APA'S OFFICE ARCHIVES THE YEAR PRIOR, WE WORKED WITH THE CONSERVATION CENTER FOR ART & HISTORIC ARTIFACTS ON THE PRESERVATION AND TREATMENT OF AFFECTED DOCUMENTS, AND MADE COMPREHENSIVE STORAGE IMPROVEMENTS TO PROTECT APA'S HISTORIC RECORDS FROM FUTURE DAMAGE.SCULPTURE LIGHTING ASSESSMENT & SIGNAGE SURVEY: THE LIGHTING DESIGN COLLABORATIVE (LDC) COMPLETED AN ASSESSMENT OF THE CURRENT CONDITIONS OF THE SCULPTURE LIGHTING ON KELLY DRIVE BASED ON THEIR 2001 DESIGNS, WITH ESTIMATES AND RECOMMENDATIONS, INCLUDING CONVERTING LIGHT FIXTURES TO LONGER LASTING LEDS. THE ASSESSMENT WAS COMPLETED IN FALL 2019, AND PLANNING CONTINUES FOR FUNDRAISING AND IMPLEMENTATION. THE APA ADDITIONALLY ENGAGED ITS FORMER ARCHIVES PROJECT COORDINATOR TO UNDERTAKE AN INVENTORY AND CONDITION ASSESSMENT (INCLUDING OWNERSHIP INFORMATION) OF ALL THE MUSEUM WITHOUT WALLS SIGNS LOCATED THROUGHOUT THE CITY."LAW, PROSPERITY AND POWER" CONSERVATION PLANNING: DURING 2019 THE APA WORKED WITH THE CITY'S OFFICE OF ARTS, CULTURE, AND THE CREATIVE ECONOMY (OACCE), PHILADELPHIA PARKS AND RECREATION, AND THE MANN MUSIC CENTER ON PLANS FOR THE COMPREHENSIVE CONSERVATION TREATMENT OF THE SCULPTURE "LAW, PROSPERITY & POWER" (1880) BY DANIEL CHESTER FRENCH, LOCATED AT THE MANN. THE APA AND PARKS & RECREATION WORKED WITH THE OACCE TO DEVELOP AN RFP FOR THE PROJECT, AND PLANNING CONTINUES FOR FUNDRAISING AND IMPLEMENTATION. LANDSCAPE CONSERVATION: THE APA CONTINUES TO CARRY OUT LANDSCAPE CONSERVATION AT THE "ELLEN PHILLIPS SAMUEL MEMORIAL SCULPTURE GARDEN." OVERALL PRESERVATION CONCERNS ARE BROADCAST THROUGH THE MEDIA, BUILDING INTEREST AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR CONSERVATION THROUGH CONTRIBUTORS TO APA'S CONSERVATION SOCIETY. THE APA ALSO ADVISES AND COLLABORATES WITH PRIVATE AND PUBLIC ORGANIZATIONS, INCLUDING PHILADELPHIA PARKS & RECREATION, THE CITY'S PUBLIC ART OFFICE, THE PRESERVATION ALLIANCE, AND THE FAIRMOUNT PARK CONSERVANCY (FORMERLY FAIRMOUNT PARK HISTORIC PRESERVATION TRUST) TO PROMOTE AWARENESS AND THE NEED FOR ONGOING CARE OF THE CITY'S HISTORIC TREASURES.

INTERPRET AND PROMOTE PUBLIC ART: PUBLIC ART IS AVAILABLE TO PEOPLE IN THE COURSE OF THEIR DAILY LIVES, AND APA'S "MUSEUM WITHOUT WALLS" IS OPEN ALL DAY AND ALL NIGHT. BY THIS VERY DEFINITION OUR AUDIENCE IS LARGE AND DIVERSE AND INCLUDES ALL AGE GROUPS, AS WELL AS PEDESTRIANS, MOTORISTS, BICYCLISTS AND RUNNERS.INTERPRETATION: TO INTERPRET AND PROMOTE PUBLIC ART, APA'S MUSEUM WITHOUT WALLS: AUDIO PROGRAM FEATURES PARTICIPANTS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE, INCLUDING ARTISTS, EDUCATORS, CURATORS, SCIENTISTS, WRITERS, HISTORIANS, CIVIC LEADERS AND FAMILY MEMBERS - "AUTHENTIC VOICES" ALL WITH PERSONAL CONNECTIONS TO THE SCULPTURES. THIS CONTENT-RICH PROGRAM IS APPROACHED THROUGH A VARIETY OF PLATFORMS: ON THE STREET BY CELL PHONE, AUDIO DOWNLOAD, SMART PHONE APP, AND ON A DEDICATED WEBSITE AS STREAMING AUDIO AND AUDIO SLIDESHOWS. DURING FY2019, THE PROGRAM WAS FURTHER DEVELOPED AND PRODUCED, ADDING TO THE NUMBER OF SCULPTURES, VOICES, STOPS AND INTERPRETIVE SIGNAGE. MUSEUM WITHOUT WALLS:AUDIO NOW FEATURES OVER 70 STOPS WITH MORE THAN 150 VOICES DISCUSSING THE SCULPTURES. A NEW BI-LINGUAL (ENGLISH AND SPANISH) AUDIO PRODUCTION WAS COMPLETED FOR ROBERT INDIANA'S "AMOR", FEATURING JOURNALIST FERNANDO MENDEZ, FATHER DENNIS GILL, RECTOR AND PASTOR OF THE CATHEDRAL BASILICA OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL, AND THE CITY'S PUBLIC ART DIRECTOR MARGOT BERG. PUBLIC PROGRAMS & EVENTS: THE APA'S SPECIAL PROJECTS OFFER PUBLIC PROGRAMS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS. FOR EXAMPLE, APA CONDUCTED A FREE PUBLIC ART BIKE TOUR IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE FAIRMOUNT PARK CONSERVANCY, WHICH INCLUDED STOPS AT THE TRISHA BROWN DANCE COMPANY PERFORMANCE IN FAIRMOUNT PARK, AND COLLABORATED WITH BAROQUE ORCHESTRA TEMPESTA DI MARE ON "PAIRING GREAT BOOKS WITH GREAT SCULPTURE" THROUGH INTERPRETIVE PROGRAMMING UTILIZING SCULPTURES RELATED TO THEIR "GREAT BOOKS" CONCERT. THE APA'S 147TH ANNUAL SPRING EVENT AT MOORE COLLEGE OF ART IN MAY 2019 FEATURED PETER MURRAY, FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF YORKSHIRE SCULPTURE PARK (YSP) IN THE UK, RELATED TO PUBLIC ART AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO THE NATURAL LANDSCAPE.SCULPTURE ZOO: IN JUNE 2019 THE APA PRESENTED "SCULPTURE ZOO IN LOGAN CIRCLE," SUPPORTED BY A CONTRIBUTION FROM CULTURE REPUBLICK, A SUBSIDIARY OF UNILEVER, WHO ALSO SERVED FREE ICE CREAM FOR THE PROGRAM. THE FAMILY ACTIVITY DREW OVER 1,200 ATTENDEES AND FEATURED LIVE ANIMALS FROM LOCAL INSTITUTIONS INSPIRED BY THE SCULPTURES WITHIN THE "SWANN MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN" AT THE LOCATION. THE EVENT INCLUDED ANIMAL SCULPTURE-MODELING DEMONSTRATIONS AND CHILDREN'S SCULPTURE-MAKING WORKSHOPS LED BY LOCAL ARTISTS. SOCIAL MEDIA: THE APA LEADS THE FIELD OF PUBLIC ART IN ITS USE OF SOCIAL AND MOBILE MEDIA AND CONTINUES TO HARNESS TECHNOLOGY TO INCREASE OUR ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY. WE HAVE DEVELOPED A COMPREHENSIVE SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY AND HAVE ESTABLISHED A ROBUST PRESENCE ON FACEBOOK, TWITTER, INSTAGRAM, YOUTUBE, GOOGLE STREET VIEW, VIMEO, AND TEACHERTUBE.
