TO END THE EPIDEMIC OF GUN VIOLENCE ACROSS THE COMMONWEALTH AND OUR COUNTRY, BY EDUCATING AND ENGAGING PENNSYLVANIANS TO CHAMPION LIFESAVING SOLUTIONS.
In 2019, Philadelphia gun homicides reached a decade-long high with more than 350 deaths. Central Pennsylvania's death toll from firearms increased by 21% over 2018 as residents from 10 years to 77 years old were killed. And as COVID-19 began in the spring of 2020, residents rushed out to buy guns in record numbers. It was in this challenging environment that CeaseFirePA Education Fund continued to engage a variety of partners as violence visited their community, organized coalitions of medical and faith leaders, collaborated with gun violence survivors and built a stronger network of citizen activism through our Leadership Institutes. These programs allowed us to quickly respond as legislators acted, and then ignored, the destruction in communities throughout the Commonwealth. Our team of organizers and volunteers coordinated vigils and rallies with violence interrupter groups after major shootings. We joined in peace marches and educated block party attendees in highly impacted communities about our mission and how they could help prevent gun deaths. We also tried new avenues for outreach, like a monthly casual BBQ and GVP policy update at First Fridays in Scranton, PA. These activities helped us prepare individuals for action and demonstrate the failure of policy leadership in addressing the gun violence epidemic.Building on these activities and our existing networks, we held more than 75 Leadership Institutes--a unique program that provides a base of knowledge of the gun violence prevention landscape and how to help drive change. These events were attended by more than 750 people at least 20% of attendees building on their knowledge by coming to multiple trainings. As stay at home orders spread in March of 2020, we turned this program into #WebinarWednesdays where thousands of individuals could hear from top experts about safe storage, local laws to address gun violence, how to engage with decision-makers and other gun violence prevention efforts. These programs regularly reached hundreds, and even thousands, of people on a weekly basis as speakers including Pennsylvania Attorney General Shapiro, the Brady Campaign, and Everytown for Gun Safety. We have recorded these sessions to build a digital library of content that can be accessed by supporters and allies in the future.
