INTERNATIONAL HOUSE PHILADELPHIA IS A MULTICULTURAL RESIDENTIAL CENTER AND A SOURCE OF DISTINCTIVE PROGRAMMING. IT HAS A CRITICAL THREE-FOLD MISSION: TO MAINTAIN A DIVERSE AND WELCOMING COMMUNITY FOR SCHOLARS FROM AROUND THE WORLD, WHILE INTRODUCING THEM TO THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE; TO BROADEN THE HORIZONS OF ITS RESIDENTS AND THE GREATER PHILADELPHIA COMMUNITY THROUGH HIGH QUALITY INTERNATIONAL ARTS AND HUMANITIES PROGRAMS; AND TO ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING, RESPECT, AND COOPERATION AMONG THE PEOPLE OF ALL NATIONS.
TO MAINTAIN A DIVERSE AND WELCOMING COMMUNITY FOR SCHOLARS FROM AROUND THE WORLD, WHILE INTRODUCING THEM TO THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE; SOURCE OF DISTINCTIVE PROGRAMMING.
INTERNATIONAL HOUSE PHILADELPHIA (IHP) IS A DIVERSE, MULTICULTURAL AND SUPPORTIVE RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY WHERE DIFFERENCES ARE SHARED AND CELEBRATED, AND ANNUALLY IS A HOME FOR OVER 1,300 STUDENTS, SCHOLARS, AND INTERNS FROM 80 COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD, INCLUDING THE US. RESIDENTS OF INTERNATIONAL HOUSE ARE ENROLLED IN PROGRAMS AT 24 DIFFERENT COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, 13 ARTS AND CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS, 15 HEALTHCARE AND LIFE SCIENCE INSTITUTIONS, AND 12 BUSINESSES, LAW AND SCIENCE ORGANIZATIONS, ALL WITH THE GREATER PHILADELPHIA REGION. ONE QUARTER OF ALL RESIDENTS (32%) ARE ENROLLED IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMS WHILE STIMULTANEOUSLY PURSUING DEGREES IN BUSINESS, THE SCIENCEES, ENGINEERING, ARTS AND LAW. THE RESIDENT LIFE OFFICE AT IHP IS FOCUSED ON MAINTAINING A DIVERSE AND WELCOMING COMMUNITY FOR SCHOLARS FROM AROUND THE WORLD WHILE INTRODUCING THEM TO THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE. IT PROVIDES CULTURAL, EDUCATIONAL, AND SOCIAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES AIMED AT BROADENING THE HORIZONS OF OUR RESIDENTS THROUGH HIGH QUALITY PROGRAMS AND OPPORTUNITIES THAT OFFER A PLATFORM FOR DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP SKILLS, IMPROVING INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION, AND FOSTERING COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT.
THE ARTS, CULTURAL, AND HUMANITIES PROGRAMMING AT INTERNATIONAL HOUSE PHILADELPHIA (IHP) OFFERS A DIVERSE ROSTER OF CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS, FILM SCREENINGS, LIVE PERFORMANCES, VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITIONS, AND EDUCATIONAL LECTURES. IN ADDITION TO IHP'S CURATED PROGRAMMING, WE COLLABORATE WITH NUMEROUS LOCAL INSTITUTIONS, ORGANIZATIONS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS TO HOST EVENTS AND FILM FESTIVALS, EXPANDING OUR REACH AND IMPACT IN THE PHILADELPHIA REGION. THIS YEAR WE SAW CONTINUED SUCCESS WITH OUR EXPANDED SERIES OF CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS, WHICH INCLUDE LUNAR NEW YEAR, DIWALI, NOWRUZ, CARNIVAL, OKTOBERFEST, AND LFTAR. THESE EVENTS REFLECT IHP'S MISSION TO ENCOURAGE MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING AND RESPECT BY AND FOR PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT CULTURES AROUND THE WORLD BY PARTICIPATING IN A VARIETY OF TRADITIONS DIFFERENT FROM THEIR OWN. IN THE FINE ARTS, IHP RENAMED ITS NEARLY 40-YEAR-OLD FILM PROGRAM TO LIGHTBOX FILM CENTER, WHICH CONTINUES TO BE PHILADELPHIA'S PREMIER EXHIBITOR OF FILM AND MOVING IMAGE ART, PRESENTING AN UNPARALLELED SLATE OF REPERTORY, NONFICTION, EXPERIMENTAL AND INTERNATIONAL CINEMA. NEW PROGRAMS ADDED TO THE LIGHTBOX ROSTER INCLUDE ARTHOUSE REVISITED, A SERIES DEDICATED TO PRESENTING CLASSICS OF WORLD CINEMA AND INDEPENDENT FILM, AND SUBVERSIVE ELEMENTS, A MONTHLY SERIES DEDICATED TO EXPERIMENTAL FILM AND ARTISTS' MOVING IMAGE. ADDITIONAL HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS PAST YEAR'S PROGRAM INCLUDE A RETROSPECTIVE OF WORKS BY PIONEERING FRENCH FILMMAKERS JEAN-MARIE STRAUB & DANIELE HUILLET; THIS IS NOW: FILM AND VIDEO AFTER PUNK, A SERIES REDISCOVERING KEY UNDERGROUND FILMS FROM THE POST-PUNK ERA IN THE UK FEATURING RESTORATIONS BY THE BRITISH FILM INSTITUTE NATIONAL ARCHIVE; FROM DOODLES TO PIXELS: OVER A HUNDRED YEARS OF SPANISH ANIMATION, A MAJOR RETROSPECTIVE SPANNING THE WIDE RANGE OF ANIMATION FILMS PRODUCED IN SPAIN; REDISCOVERING A PHILADELPHIA PIONEER: DONYA FEUER'S DANCE/FILM COLLABORATIONS WITH INGMAR BERGMAN, ROMOLA NIJINSKY, AND OTHERS, WHICH FOCUSED ON THE DANCER/CHOREOGRAPHER'S IMPRESSIVE BODY OF EXPERIMENTAL DANCE FILMS; AND 45 YEARS OF WOMEN MAKE MOVIES, A YEAR-LONG CELEBRATION OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DISTRIBUTOR OF INDEPENDENT FILMS BY AND ABOUT WOMEN. WE ALSO CONTINUED OUR MONTHLY FAMILY MATINEE SERIES, INTRODUCING CHILDREN TO IMAGINATIVE CINEMA FROM AROUND THE WORLD. IN CONTINUATION OF OUR COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING A VENUE FOR PRESENTING WORKS OF CINEMA THAT ENGAGE AUDIENCES IN DIALOGUE ABOUT IMPORTANT GLOBAL ISSUES, WE MAINTAINED PARTNERSHIPS WITH ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS BLACKSTAR FILM FESTIVAL, CINEMA AND MEDIA STUDIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA, PHILADELPHIA ASIAN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL, SCRIBE VIDEO CENTER, AND OTHERS. OUR CONTINUED PARTNERSHIP WITH INTERCULTURAL JOURNEYS BROUGHT LIVE WORLD MUSIC AND DANCE PERFORMANCES TO OUR VENUE EXPLORING THE THEME OF HOMELAND: CULTURAL MIGRATIONS THROUGH ARTISTRY. A NEW PARTNERSHIP FORMED WITH THE DA VINCI ART ALLIANCE ADDED ROTATING ART EXHIBITS TO OUR GALLERY SPACE. WE ALSO PRESENTED COMMUNITY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, INCLUDING DACA: A DYING DREAM? IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE MEXICAN CONSULATE OF PHILADELPHIA AND A CONVERSATION ON IMMIGRATION AND THE AMERICAN CITY IN COLLABORATION WITH AI-BUSTAN SEEDS OF CULTURE HELD AT CITY HALL.
