IT PROVIDED CULTURAL, EDUCATIONAL, AND SOCIAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES AIMED AT BROADENING THE HORIZONS OF RESIDENTS THROUGH HIGH QUALITY PROGRAMS AND OPPORTUNITIES OFFERING A PLATFORM FOR DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP SKILLS, IMPROVING INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION, AND FOSTERING COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. IHP CEASED OPERATION OF ITS RESIDENTIAL HOUSING PROGRAM IN DECEMBER 2019 IN PREPARATION FOR THE SALE OF ITS PROPERTY AT 3701 CHESTNUT STREET IN PHILADELPHIA.
DURING THE FIRST HALF OF FY20 PRIOR TO THE CLOSURE OF ITS LEGACY PROGRAMS IN DECEMBER 2019, ARTS PROGRAMMING AT IHP OFFERED A DIVERSE ROSTER OF FILM SCREENINGS, LIVE PERFORMANCES, VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITIONS, EDUCATIONAL AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS. IN ADDITION TO IHP'S CURATED PROGRAMMING, WE COLLABORATED WITH NUMEROUS LOCAL INSTITUTIONS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND COMMUNITY GROUPS TO HOST EVENTS AND FILM FESTIVALS, EXPANDING OUR REACH AND IMPACT IN THE PHILADELPHIA REGION. IHP'S SIGNATURE ARTS PROGRAM LIGHTBOX FILM CENTER IS PHILADELPHIA'S PREMIER EXHIBITOR OF FILM AND MOVING IMAGE ART, PRESENTING AN UNPARALLELED SLATE OF REPERTORY, NONFICTION, EXPERIMENTAL AND INTERNATIONAL CINEMA. LIGHTBOX'S RECURRING SERIES INCLUDED ARTHOUSE REVISITED - PRESENTING CLASSICS OF WORLD CINEMA AND INDEPENDENT FILM, SUBVERSIVE ELEMENTS - DEDICATED TO EXPERIMENTAL FILM AND ARTISTS' MOVING IMAGE, AND OUR MONTHLY FAMILY MATINEES - INTRODUCING CHILDREN TO IMAGINATIVE CINEMA FROM AROUND THE WORLD. WE CONTINUED TO SHINE A SPOTLIGHT ON IMPORTANT CINEMA ARTISTS AROUND THE WORLD BY PRESENTING SERIES THROUGH THE EYES OF ABBAS KIAROSTAMI - A RETROSPECTIVE OF THE LATE IRANIAN DIRECTOR, AND CZECH THAT FILM - HIGHLIGHTING THE BEST IN CONTEMPORARY CZECH CINEMA. WE CONCLUDED THE YEAR WITH DREAM DANCE: THE ART OF ED EMSHWILLER, THE FIRST MAJOR MONOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION OF THE ARTIST'S GROUNDBREAKING WORK IN FILM, VIDEO, AND VISUAL ART. THE SERIES INCLUDED THE PRESERVATION OF TWO OF EMSHWILLER'S EARLIEST FILMS, WHICH SCREENED AT LIGHTBOX ALONG WITH 19 OF HIS OTHER FILMS - SOME OF WHICH HAD NEVER BEEN PUBLICLY PRESENTED IN PHILADELPHIA. A CONCURRENT EXHIBITION AT THE ROSENWALD-WOLF GALLERY HIGHLIGHTED EMSHWILLER'S VISUAL AND FINE ART BACKGROUND, ALONG WITH A NEWLY PRODUCED EXHIBITION CATALOG FEATURING EMSHWILLER'S ARTWORK AND ARCHIVAL MATERIALS. LIGHTBOX PRESENTED TWO FREE OUTDOOR SCREENINGS FOR THE COMMUNITY IN COLLABORATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY CITY SCIENCE CENTER AND THE WOODLANDS. WE CONTINUED OUR COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROGRAM DEEP DIVE, AN ONGOING SERIES OF FREE PUBLIC CONVERSATIONS FOCUSING ON A WIDE RANGE OF TOPICS AND THEMES RELATED TO FILMS SCREENED AT LIGHTBOX. THESE INFORMAL DISCUSSIONS WITH ARTISTS, SCHOLARS AND FILM ENTHUSIASTS BRING THE FILM GOING EXPERIENCE INTO A DISCURSIVE SETTING, EXTENDING WHAT'S ON SCREEN TO WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND. OUR CONTINUED PARTNERSHIP WITH THE DA VINCI ART ALLIANCE BROUGHT ROTATING ART EXHIBITS TO OUR GALLERY SPACE. IN CONTINUATION OF OUR COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING A VENUE FOR PRESENTING WORKS OF CINEMA THAT ENGAGE AUDIENCES IN DIALOGUE ABOUT IMPORTANT GLOBAL ISSUES, WE MAINTAINED PARTNERSHIPS WITH ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS BLACKSTAR FILM FESTIVAL, CINEMA AND MEDIA STUDIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA, PHILADELPHIA ASIAN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL, SCRIBE VIDEO CENTER, AND OTHERS. THE YEAR CONCLUDED WITH A CELEBRATION OF 40 YEARS OF FILM AT INTERNATIONAL HOUSE.AS PART OF ITS REPOSITIONING EFFORTS, IHP SOUGHT TO FIND A NEW HOME FOR LIGHTBOX FILM CENTER TO ENSURE THAT ITS MISSION AND AUDIENCE CONTINUE TO BE WELL-SERVED.
