Organizations Filed Purposes: TO PERFORM CHORAL MUSIC TO CREATE A SHARED TRANSCENDENT EXPERIENCE AMONG ITS SINGERS AND AUDIENCES. THROUGH THE EXCELLENCE OF ITS ADVENTUROUS PERFORMANCES, MENDELSSOHN CLUB OF PHILADELPHIA (MCP) ADVANCES THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHORAL MUSIC AS AN ART FORM.

TO ADVANCE CHORAL MUSIC AS AN ART FORM THROUGH THE POWER OF COMMUNAL SINGING.

CHORAL PERFORMANCES: MCP HAS A LONG AND RICH HISTORY OF MUSIC-MAKING IN THE PHILADELPHIA COMMUNITY, BY PUTTING ON A SEASON OF CHORAL PERFORMANCES EACH YEAR. MCP'S 2019-2020 SEASON WAS LED BY INTERIM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR DR. JOHN P. LEONARD. HE LED THE CHORUS THROUGH A STELLAR SEASON OF NOTABLE PERFORMANCES, INCLUDING TWO SOLD-OUT CONCERTS AND AN UNANTICIPATED VIRTUAL PERFORMANCE. THE YEAR WAS EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL, EXCEEDING CONCERT REVENUE DESPITE ONLY BEING ABLE TO HOLD THREE OF OUR FOUR IN PERSON CONCERTS. THE SEASON OPENED STRONG WITH RACHMANINOFF'S ALL-NIGHT VIGIL ON OCTOBER 27, 2019 AT THE BEAUTIFUL PHILADELPHIA EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL. DR. NATALKA POVLOSKY WEISMANTAL COACHED THE CHORUS ON CORRECT DICTION FOR CHURCH SLAVONIC AND LED A WELL-RECEIVED PRE-CONCERT DISCUSSION. THE PERENNIALLY-POPULAR A FEAST OF CAROLS WAS HELD ON DECEMBER 14, 2019 AT ST. PAUL'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN CHESTNUT HILL. LATER THAT MONTH, MCP JOINED THE PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA AGAIN FOR THEIR GLORIOUS SOUND OF CHRISTMAS CONCERT WITH MAESTRO BRAMWELL TOVEY.ON MARCH 27, 2020, MCP CELEBRATED THE 250TH ANNIVERSARY OF BEETHOVEN'S BIRTH WITH TWO WORKS: MASS IN C AND CHORAL FANTASY. ATTENDEES DESCRIBED THE CONCERT AS "BRILLIANT", "MAGICAL", AND "OFF THE CHART" GREAT. LIMITLESS, OUR LAST AND FINAL CONCERT OF THE SEASON WAS CANCELLED DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. INSTEAD, MCP PRODUCED AND RELEASED THE WORLD PREMIERE AND VIRTUAL PERFORMANCE OF OLA GJEILLO'S BEAUTIFUL AND SOULFUL "ROOTS", ON MAY 17, 2020. THE PERFORMANCE, WHICH WAS DEDICATED TO FORREST GLASS AND SARAH KRIEGER, TWO CHERISHED MEMBERS OF THE MCP COMMUNITY WHO PASSED IN THE SPRING OF 2020, HAS MORE THAN 5,000 VIEWS ON YOUTUBE. IT WAS ALSO FEATURED AS PART OF CHORUS AMERICA'S NATIONAL VIRTUAL CONFERENCE. THE PANDEMIC DRAMATICALLY IMPACTED MENDELSSOHN CHORUS OF PHILADELPHIA. MCP HAD TO CANCEL ITS FINAL CONCERT OF THE 4-PERFORMANCE SEASON, WHICH SUBSTANTIALLY AFFECTED ANNUAL TICKET REVENUE AND TOTAL AUDIENCE NUMBERS. MCP ALSO HAD TO QUICKLY PIVOT THE ANNUAL FUNDRAISER, MENDELSSOHN MEDLEY, TO A VIRTUAL EVENT. WHILE THE ONLINE VERSION INCORPORATED A SUCCESSFUL AUCTION AND GENERATED MORE REVENUE THAN ANTICIPATED, MCP DID LOSE SIGNIFICANT ENTRANCE TICKET REVENUE SINCE THE MEDLEY IS USUALLY A LIVE EVENT HELD IN A DESIRABLE VENUE. AS A PERFORMING ARTS ORGANIZATION, THE ABILITY TO HOLD LIVE CONCERTS AND EVENTS IS FUNDAMENTAL TO MCP'S MISSION. FUNDS FROM THESE TWO PROGRAMS WERE CRUCIAL TO ENABLING MCP TO CONTINUE TO PAY ARTISTIC AND ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF SO THAT THE ORGANIZATION CAN WEATHER THE TRANSITION TO VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING AND FUNDRAISING UNTIL THE LIVE-PERFORMANCES RETURN.
