THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN JEWISH HISTORY, ON INDEPENDENCE MALL IN PHILADELPHIA, PRESENTS EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND EXPERIENCES THAT PRESERVE, EXPLORE, AND CELEBRATE THE HISTORY OF JEWS IN AMERICA. ITS PURPOSE IS TO CONNECT JEWS MORE CLOSELY TO THEIR HERITAGE AND TO INSPIRE IN PEOPLE OF ALL BACKGROUNDS A GREATER APPRECIATION FOR THE DIVERSITY OF THE AMERICAN JEWISH EXPERIENCE AND THE FREEDOMS TO WHICH AMERICANS ASPIRE.
THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN JEWISH HISTORY (NMAJH) BRINGS TO LIFE THE 360-YEAR HISTORY OF JEWS IN AMERICA. LOCATED ON HISTORIC INDEPENDENCE MALL IN PHILADELPHIA, NMAJH SITS ADJACENT TO THE ICONS OF FREEDOM IN AMERICAN HISTORY AND CONTRIBUTES TO THE NATIONAL DIALOGUE ON RELIGION, ETHNICITY, AND PLURALISM. THE MUSEUM IS THE ONLY INSTITUTION THAT TELLS THE STORY OF AMERICAN HISTORY THROUGH THE LENS OF THE JEWISH EXPERIENCE, UNIQUELY TRACING HOW JEWISH IMMIGRANTS BECAME JEWISH AMERICANS. THROUGH DYNAMIC, INTERACTIVE EXHIBITIONS AND ENGAGING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, THE MUSEUM INVITES VISITORS OF ALL BACKGROUNDS TO CELEBRATE THEIR OWN HERITAGES, HISTORIES, AND TRADITIONS BY REFLECTING ON HOW IMMIGRANTS SHAPE AND ARE SHAPED BY THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE.
THE MUSEUM PRESENTED TWO SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS IN FISCAL YEAR 2020: SARA BERMAN'S CLOSET, CO-CREATED BY RENOWNED ILLUSTRATOR AND AUTHOR MAIRA KALMAN, ABOUT ONE WOMAN'S 20TH-CENTURY IMMIGRATION STORY, AND NOTORIOUS RBG: THE LIFE & TIMES OF JUSTICE RUTH BADER GINSBURG. PUBLIC PROGRAMS FEATURED LUMINARIES SUCH AS JUSTICE GINSBURG, JOURNALIST NINA TOTENBERG, CIVIL RIGHTS ATTORNEY ROBERTA KAPLAN, AND DESIGNER ISAAC MIZRAHI AS WELL AS SCHOLARLY PANELS, FILM SCREENINGS, AUTHOR TALKS, AND CONCERTS. WHEN NMAJH CLOSED DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE MUSEUM RESTRUCTURED TO SERVE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF ATTENDEES THROUGH DIGITAL PROGRAMS.
