Organizations Filed Purposes: The Philadelphia Folksong Society (PFS) is dedicated to preserving the past, promoting the present, and securing the future of folk music and related forms of expression through education, presentation and participation.

The Philadelphia folk festival is the most visible of the programs that pfs executes. Pff is the oldest continuously run outdoor music festival in all of North America, held in August each year (for 57 years and counting)! The festival showcases over 100 artists on eight stages for four nights and three days in the sub-genres of alternative folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues, cajun, celtic, country folk, indie folk, jazz, native, singer/songwriter, trad, world, and more: all sub-genres of folk music. In addition to traditional audience presentation, the festival gives a wide array of educational opportunities in areas such as playing, songwriting, participation, history, and traditions through workshops and presentations of artists who share both history and oral storytelling. The festival also provides volunteers the ability to participate in the entire process of producing the festival.

Throughout the year, The Society continues their core mission through several programs. The Odyssey of American Music Education program brings music lessons, instrument lessons, and concerts to classrooms. Professional musicians work with teachers to provide programs that are appropriate to curriculum. Programs are strongly situated in the history and place of music in history. Through its seasonal heritage retreats, programs such as Spring Thing and Fall Fling, participants gather for workshops, presentation, education, as well as opportunities to be involved in the processes of executing these retreats. Highly participative and open to the public, these retreats provide opportunity for folk expression. The Philadelphia music co-op provides professional development and opportunity to musicians to hone their skills and present their art throughout the region.
