THE SOCIETY OF HOSPITAL MEDICINE IS DEDICATED TO PROMOTING THE HIGHEST QUALITY CARE FOR ALL HOSPITALIZED PATIENTS. SHM IS COMMITTED TO PROMOTING EXCELLENCE IN THE PRACTICE OF HOSPITAL MEDICINE THROUGH EDUCATION, ADVOCACY AND RESEARCH.
EDUCATIONANNUAL MEETING IS TO BE PART OF THE HOSPITAL MEDICINE MOVEMENT WITH OVER 3,600 ATTENDEES THAT ARE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN OVER 120 DIFFERENT EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS. ADDITIONALLY, AT THE 2019 ANNUAL MEETING THERE WERE OVER 1,100 PARTICIPANTS IN THE POSTER SESSION THAT SHOWCASES AREAS OF ACADEMIC RESEARCH, INNOVATION AND KEY CLINICAL CASES.OTHER EDUCATION INITIATIVESLEADERSHIP ACADEMY - SHM CONDUCTS A 3 PART EDUCATIONAL TRAINING COURSE THAT PREPARES PHYSICIANS FOR MANAGERIAL AND C-SUITE POSITIONS. THESE COURSES FOCUS ON PERSONAL, ORGANIZATIONAL AND TEAM SKILL DEVELOPMENT FOR THOSE LOOKING TO TRANSITION BEYOND THE CLINICAL ROLE. TO DATE, SHM HAS HAD OVER 1,500 GRADUATES OF THE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY.QSEA - IN RESPONSE TO CHANGING REQUIREMENTS FOR RESIDENCY TRAINING PROGRAMS AND INCREASING NEED FOR SYSTEMS-BASED COMPETENCY, SHM DEVELOPED A COURSE THAT PROVIDES INSTRUCTION AND GUIDANCE ON HOW TO TEACH TRAINEES (PRIMARILY RESIDENTS) QUALITY AND SAFETY TOPICS. THE QUALITY AND SAFETY EDUCATORS ACADEMY PROVIDES MEDICAL EDUCATORS WITH THE KNOWLEDGE AND TOOLS TO DEVELOP QUALITY IMPROVEMENT AND SAFETY CURRICULA AND LEAD NEW INITIATIVES IN CHANGING ENVIRONMENTS. THE QUALITY AND SAFETY EDUCATORS ACADEMY IS A 2-1/2 DAY ACADEMY DESIGNED AS A FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM AND SPONSORED BY THE SOCIETY OF HOSPITAL MEDICINE (SHM) AND THE ALLIANCE FOR ACADEMIC INTERNAL MEDICINE (AAIM). IT IS INTENDED FOR:- PROGRAM DIRECTORS OR ASSISTANT PROGRAM DIRECTORS INTERESTED IN ACQUIRING NEW CURRICULAR IDEAS TO HELP THEM MEET THE ACGME REQUIREMENTS WHICH REQUIRE RESIDENCY PROGRAMS TO INTEGRATE QUALITY AND SAFETY INTO THEIR CURRICULUM- MEDICAL SCHOOL LEADERS OR CLERKSHIP DIRECTORS DEVELOPING QUALITY AND SAFETY CURRICULA FOR STUDENTS- FACULTY WHO ARE BEGINNING A NEW ROLE OR EXPANDING AN EXISTING ROLE IN QUALITY AND SAFETY EDUCATION- QUALITY AND SAFETY LEADERS WHO WISH TO EXTEND THEIR INFLUENCE AND EFFECTIVENESS BY LEARNING STRATEGIES TO TEACH AND ENGAGE TRAINEESAHA - FOR SEVEN YEARS, SHM HAS CO-PRESENTED THE ACADEMIC HOSPITALIST ACADEMY, WHICH PROVIDES ACADEMIC HOSPITALISTS WITH THE EDUCATIONAL, SCHOLARLY AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SKILLS THEY NEED TO ADVANCE THEIR CAREERS AND BEGIN A PATHWAY TO SUCCESS IN ACADEMIC HOSPITAL MEDICINE. THE PRINCIPAL GOALS OF THE ACADEMY ARE TO:- DEVELOP JUNIOR ACADEMIC HOSPITALISTS AS THE PREMIER TEACHERS AND EDUCATIONAL LEADERS AT THEIR INSTITUTIONS- HELP ACADEMIC HOSPITALISTS DEVELOP SCHOLARLY WORK AND INCREASE SCHOLARLY OUTPUT- ENHANCE AWARENESS OF THE VALUE OF QUALITY IMPROVEMENT AND PATIENT SAFETY WORK- SUPPORT ACADEMIC PROMOTION OF ALL ATTENDEES
SITE-BASED DEMONSTRATION PROJECTSTHE CENTER FOR QUALITY IMPROVEMENT WAS CREATED TO PROMOTE INNOVATIVE AND EFFECTIVE METHODS FOR IMPROVING PATIENT CARE AND SUSTAINABLE OUTCOMES THROUGH QUALITY IMPROVEMENT AND PATIENT SAFETY INITIATIVES. THE CENTER DEVELOPS PROGRAMS AND RESOURCES TO SUPPORT HOSPITALISTS AND OTHER HOSPITAL CLINICIANS IN IMPROVING CARE AND PATIENT SAFETY OUTCOMES FOR PATIENTS. IN 2011, SHM BECAME THE FIRST NATIONAL MEDICAL SOCIETY TO BE RECOGNIZED WITH THE EISENBERG AWARD. THE AWARD WAS GRANTED IN RECOGNITION OF SHM'S MENTORED IMPLEMENTATION (MI) MODEL WHICH HAS BEEN UTILIZED IN MORE THAN 500 HOSPITALS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. SHM PARTNERS WITH MULTIPLE, DIVERSE PARTNERS AND FUNDERS TO PROVIDE A UNIQUE PORTFOLIO OF QUALITY IMPROVEMENT RESOURCES. THE CENTER PROVIDES IMPLEMENTATION SUPPORT FOR HOSPITALS THROUGH PHYSICIAN MENTORING AND TAILORED IMPROVEMENT INITIATIVES TO IMPROVE CLINICAL OUTCOMES. SHM ACCOMPLISHES THIS THROUGH VARIOUS OFFERINGS AND MECHANISMS. OUR MI PROGRAM PROVIDES MENTORED SUPPORT FOR HOSPITAL TEAMS IMPLEMENTING A SPECIFIC QUALITY INTERVENTION AT THEIR HOSPITAL DURING AN 18-MONTH PROGRAM. THE MODEL CREATES A MECHANISM TO DISSEMINATE BEST PRACTICES AND SHARE EFFECTIVE, FIELD-TESTED IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES. ADDITIONALLY, THE QUALITY IMPROVEMENT FRAMEWORK FACILITATES EFFECTIVE MEASUREMENT OF BASELINE STATUS AND PROGRESS TO DATE, THEREBY IMPROVING CARE MEANINGFULLY WHILE FOSTERING QI/LEADERSHIP SKILLS IN HOSPITALISTS AND THEIR PARTICIPATING TEAMS. THE MI MODEL ASSISTS CLINICIANS IN SUCCESSFULLY OPERATIONALIZING EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE AT HOSPITALS.AN EXAMPLE OF SOME OF THE CURRENT PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS WITHIN SHM'S CENTER FOR QUALITY IMPROVEMENT PORTFOLIO INCLUDE: - MEDICATION RECONCILIATION- GLYCEMIC CONTROL FOR INPATIENTS- IMPROVING FAMILY-CENTERED CARE (FAMILY CENTERED I-PASS)- IMPROVING STROKE CARE FOR HOSPITALIZED PATIENTS- DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS/PULMONARY EMBOLISM- IMPROVING PAIN MANAGEMENT AND REDUCING ADVERSE EVENTS ASSOCIATED WITH OPIOIDS
MEMBERSHIPTHE SOCIETY OF HOSPITAL MEDICINE (SHM) IS DEDICATED TO SUPPORTING THE NEEDS OF HOSPITAL MEDICINE PROFESSIONALS AND PROMOTING EXCEPTIONAL CARE FOR HOSPITALIZED PATIENTS.
