THE MISSION OF ST. CHRISTOPHER'S FOUNDATION FOR CHILDREN (SCFC) IS TO SUPPORT THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF CHILDREN IN THE COMMUNITY SERVED BY ST. CHRISTOPHER'S HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN THROUGH PROGRAMS IN THE AREAS OF CARE, OUTREACH, RESEARCH AND EDUCATION.
ST. CHRISTOPHER'S FOUNDATION FOR CHILDREN (SCFC) SUPPORTS THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF CHILDREN.
THE COMMUNITY ORAL HEALTH INITIATIVE PROGRAM FACILITATES FREE CARE AND SERVICES TO LOW-INCOME CHILDREN, INCLUDING THOSE WHO ARE UNINSURED, PROVIDING COMPREHENSIVE ORAL HEALTHCARE AND EDUCATION. THE PROGRAM REACHES MORE THAN 2,800 CHILDREN ANNUALLY (PRE-COVID-19), COLLABORATING WITH 76 SCHOOLS (PUBLIC, PAROCHIAL AND CHARTER), AND COMMUNITY BASED ORGANIZATIONS (INCLUDING SHELTERS AND FOSTER CARE CENTERS). ST. CHRISTOPHER'S HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN HOSTS CLINIC DAYS AND EVENINGS ON ITS CAMPUS, AND PROVIDES IN-KIND GOODS AND SERVICES INCLUDING OFFICE SPACE AND PARKING, CLINICAL OVERSIGHT, AND PARTICIPATION OF DENTAL RESIDENTS WHO PROVIDE CLINICAL ASSISTANCE, AMONG OTHER THINGS.THE RONALD MCDONALD CARE MOBILE ("RMCM"), A MAJOR PROGRAM COMPONENT, IS A FORTY-FOOT TRUCK EQUIPPED WITH THREE DENTAL OPERATORIES, AN INSTRUMENT PROCESSING CENTER AND WAITING AREA. IT VISITS PATIENTS AT HEAD START FACILITIES, EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTERS, ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS K-8 AND SUMMER CAMPS. NEW AND CONTINUING CARE PATIENTS GET A THOROUGH EXAM, X-RAYS, PREVENTATIVE SERVICES. DENTISTS TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION PROVIDING RESTORATIVE TREATMENT - FILLINGS, CROWNS, EXTRACTIONS AND SPACE MAINTAINERS TO ARREST DISEASE AND DECAY. RMCM SERVES AS A DENTAL HOME TO PATIENTS AND IS AVAILABLE FOR CARE ACCESS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL SETTING.PROGRAM DENTISTS AND HYGIENISTS VISIT THE SITES AND PATIENTS ANNUALLY, PROVIDING COMPREHENSIVE CARE ON AN ONGOING BASIS. CHILDREN, FAMILIES AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE INVITED TO EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS AT COMMUNITY MEETINGS, HEALTH FAIRS AND OTHER LOCAL EVENTS. ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS RECEIVE AGE-APPROPRIATE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES AT SCHOOLS IN TARGETED AREAS. SINCE 2006, THE PROGRAM HAS SERVED APPROXIMATELY 19,000 NEW PATIENTS, INCLUDING 323 IN THE FISCAL YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2020, AND APROXIMATELY 12,000 RE-CARE PATIENTS, INCLUDING 743 IN THE FISCAL YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2020. ADDITIONAL SERVICES PROVIDED ARE 1,166 SEALANTS AND 270 RESTORATIONS IN THE FISCAL YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2020. THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC LIMITED THE PROGRAM'S OUTREACH FROM MARCH 15 THROUGH THE FISCAL YEAR-END JUNE 30, 2020.
OUR FARM TO FAMILIES PROGRAM IS A COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY-BASED EFFORT TO IMPROVE THE DIETS AND HEALTH OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES IN NORTH PHILADELPHIA BY ADDRESSING OBSTACLES TO HEALTHY EATING: ACCESS TO NUTRITIOUS FOOD AND ACCESS TO INFORMATION ON NUTRITION AND FOOD PREPARATION. ST. CHRISTOPHER'S FOUNDATION FOR CHILDREN PARTNERS WITH THE LANCASTER FARM FRESH COOPERATIVE ("LFFC") TO SOURCE, PACKAGE AND DELIVER FRESH FOOD TO FARM TO FAMILY COMMUNITY FOOD HUBS. THE MAJORITY OF THE PRODUCE IS ORGANICALLY GROWN, PICKED FRESH AND BROUGHT DOWN TO PHILADELPHIA THE VERY NEXT DAY - MAKING IT SOME OF THE HEALTHIEST FOOD AVAILABLE IN THE COUNTRY.FAMILIES PLACE ORDERS AND PURCHASE $14 AND $18 BOXES OF ASSORTED SEASONAL FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. MEMBERS REFERRED TO THE PROGRAM BY THEIR PEDIATRICIAN AND THOSE WHO USE SNAP BENEFITS RECEIVE THE BOXES AT A SUBSIDIZED COST OF $10 AND $15. A LA CARTE ITEMS SUCH AS EGGS, FISH AND CHEESE ARE ALSO AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE. FAMILIES ARE ABLE TO PURCHASE A BOX OF PRODUCE, ENJOY TASTE TESTS, OBTAIN INFORMATION ON THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF THE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES THEY HAVE PURCHASED, RECEIVE CULTURALLY AND ECONOMICALLY SENSITIVE RECIPES TO PREPARE, AND WITNESS COOKING DEMONSTRATIONS AT THE FARM TO FAMILIES SITES.SINCE THE PROGRAM BEGAN IN 2010, OVER 60,000 FARM TO FAMILIES BOXES HAVE BEEN PURCHASED AND CONSUMED.IN 2012, A CLINICAL COMPONENT WAS ADDED TO FARM TO FAMILIES. A FRESHRX PROGRAM WAS CREATED SO MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS COULD WRITE A PRESCRIPTION TO THE FARM TO FAMILIES PROGRAM FOR THEIR PATIENTS WHO ARE EXPERIENCING, OR ARE AT RISK FOR, OBESITY, DIABETES, OR HYPERTENSION. THE PROGRAM IS ALSO AVAILABLE FOR CHILDREN WHO HAVE CHRONIC ILLNESSES. THE PRESCRIPTION SERVES NOT ONLY AS A REFERRAL TO THE PROGRAM, BUT QUALIFIES PARTICIPANTS TO RECEIVE THE FARM TO FAMILIES BOXES AT THE SUBSIDIZED RATES. SINCE THE PROGRAM'S INCEPTION, OVER 960 FRESH RX PRESCRIPTIONS HAVE BEEN REDEEMED.
SCFC SERVES AS THE FIDUCIARY AND FISCAL SPONSOR FOR OVER 25 DONOR DESIGNATED FUNDS THAT SUPPORT RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND PATIENT COMFORT AT ST. CHRISTOPHER'S HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN.
