FOUNDED BY ANDREW CARNEGIE IN 1895, CARNEGIE MUSEUMS OF PITTSBURGH IS A COLLECTION OF FOUR DISTINCTIVE MUSEUMS DEDICATED TO EXPLORATION THROUGH ART AND SCIENCE: CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF ART, CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, CARNEGIE SCIENCE CENTER AND THE ANDY WARHOL MUSEUM.IN 2019, THE MUSEUMS REACHED 1.5 MILLION PEOPLE THROUGH EXHIBITIONS, EDUCATION PROGRAMS, OUTREACH ACTIVITIES AND SPECIAL EVENTS.
CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF ART (CMOA) CONTINUES TO BE A STRATEGIC PARTNER IN REGIONAL EDUCATION INITIATIVES TO REACH AND ENGAGE AUDIENCES WITH SPECIALLY DESIGNED PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES, COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS, AND FREE OR DISCOUNTED ADMISSIONS AND PROGRAM FEES. IN 2019, CMOA CONCLUDED THE 57TH EDITION OF THE CARNEGIE INTERNATIONAL, WHICH FEATURED THE WORKS OF 32 INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS. LATER IN THE YEAR, A GROUP OF CURATORIAL EXPERTS CONVENED TO GATHER FEEDBACK AND STIMULATE NEW THINKING ABOUT FUTURE INTERNATIONALS. CMOA'S EDUCATION TEAM CELEBRATED ITS 90TH BIRTHDAY OF THE ART CONNECTION, PITTSBURGH'S PREMIER ART PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 5 THROUGH 9. THE MUSEUM ALSO SHOWCASED TWO NEW EXHIBITIONS: "ACCESS+ABILITY," A TRAVELING EXHIBIT THAT HIGHLIGHTED DESIGNS DEVELOPED WITH AND BY PEOPLE OF VARYING DISABILITIES, AND "AN ART OF CHANGES: JASPER JOHNS PRINTS," WHICH FEATURED THE WORKS OF ONE OF AMERICA'S MOST INFLUENTIAL CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS. ATTENDANCE FOR 2019 REACHED 235,819.
CARNEGIE SCIENCE CENTER (CSC) BROUGHT TWO POPULAR EXHIBITIONS TO PITTSBURGH IN 2019: "DA VINCI THE EXHIBITION, AND "MUMMIES OF THE WORLD THE EXHIBITION." DA VINCI FEATURED ART REPRODUCTIONS, RECREATED INVENTIONS, AND EIGHT ACTIVITY TABLES INSPIRED BY LEONARD DA VINCI'S CREATIONS. MUMMIES OF THE WORLD FEATURED THE LARGEST COLLECTION OF REAL MUMMIES AND RELATED ARTIFACTS EVER ASSEMBLED. IN THE SUMMER OF 2019, THE BUHL PLANETARIUM AND OBSERVATORY INTRODUCED A NEW SHOW, "FLY ME TO THE MOON," IN CELEBRATION OF THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MOON LANDING. THE SHOW HIGHLIGHTED PITTSBURGHERS' CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE APOLLO 11 MISSION. THE CARNEGIE SCIENCE CENTER CONTINUES TO BE RECOGNIZED INTERNATIONALLY AS A LEADER IN PROMOTING STEM LITERACY, AND IS DEDICATED TO NURTURING THE NEXT GENERATION OF INNOVATORS AND LEADERS WHO WILL RISE TO MEET TOMORROW'S WORKFORCE NEEDS. ATTENDANCE IN 2019 REACHED 734,316.
CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY (CMNH) CONTINUES TO BE RANKED AMONG THE TOP NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUMS IN THE COUNTRY. IT MAINTAINS, PRESERVES, AND INTERPRETS AN EXTRAORDINARY COLLECTION OF MORE THAN 22 MILLION OBJECTS AND SCIENTIFIC SPECIMENS USED TO BROADEN THE UNDERSTANDING OF EVOLUTION, CONSERVATION, AND BIODIVERSITY. CMNH GENERATES NEW SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE, ADVANCES SCIENCE LITERACY, AND INSPIRES VISITORS OF ALL AGES TO BECOME PASSIONATE ABOUT SCIENCE, NATURE AND WORLD CULTURES. IN 2019, FOLLOWING THE SUCCESS OF THE "WE ARE NATURE EXHIBITION," CMNH OPENED ITS ANTHROPOCENE LIVING ROOM, A SPACE FOR CONTINED EXPLORATION OF THE TOPIC. THE MUSEUM ALSO LAUNCHED NATURE 360, A WEEKLY ONSITE PROGRAM FOR KIDS AGES 8-13 TO LEARN ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT, AND THE CLIMATE AND RURAL SYSTEMS PARTNERSHIP, A LEARNING NETWORK TO CONNECT AND EMPOWER WESTERN PA EDUCATORS, SCIENTISTS, AND COMMUNITY LEADERS TO ADDRESS CLIMATE CHANGE ISSUES WITH RURAL AUDIENCES. IN THE FALL OF 2019, THE TRAVELING EXHIBITION, "NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC: 50 GREATEST WILDLIFE," WAS LAUNCHED AT THE MUSEUM. ATTENDANCE REACHED 329,647 IN 2019.
