THE CENTER FOR ORGAN RECOVERY & EDUCATION (CORE) IS A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO PROMOTING DONATION, EDUCATION AND RESEARCH FOR THE PURPOSE OF SAVING AND ENHANCING LIVES THROUGH ORGAN, TISSUE AND CORNEA TRANSPLANTATION. CORE OPERATES UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF EIGHT VALUES: INTEGRITY, COMPASSION, QUALITY, RESPONSIVENESS, EDUCATION, INNOVATION, RESPECT AND LIFE. CORE HAD MANY NOTEWORTHY ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2019, INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING:BALDRIGE WIN:CORE WAS NAMED A 2019 MALCOLM BALDRIGE NATIONAL QUALITY AWARD WINNER BY U.S. COMMERCE SECRETARY WILBUR ROSS. A PRESIDENTIAL-LEVEL HONOR, THE BALDRIGE AWARD IS THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR PERFORMANCE EXCELLENCE THAT A U.S. ORGANIZATION CAN RECEIVE. CORE IS ONE OF ONLY FIVE PENNSYLVANIA AND TWO WEST VIRGINIA ORGANIZATIONS EVER TO ACHIEVE THE BALDRIGE AWARD IN ITS MORE THAN 30-YEAR HISTORY. FOR CORE, THE AWARD IS THE RESULT OF A NEAR DECADE-LONG PERFORMANCE EXCELLENCE JOURNEY, AND A TESTAMENT TO CORE'S DEDICATION TO OUR MISSION TO SAVE AND HEAL LIVES THROUGH DONATION. IT'S A SHOWCASE OF OUR VALUES, AND OF OUR RELENTLESS DRIVE TO INNOVATE AND INTEGRATE PROGRAMS AND BEST PRACTICES AND PROOF THAT, IN THE IMPROVEMENTS WE MAKE AND THE EXCELLENCE TOWARD WHICH WE STRIVE, CORE IS CHANGING THE LIVES OF GRIEVING DONOR FAMILIES, COURAGEOUS TRANSPLANT RECIPIENTS AND THOSEWV HUNTING AND FISHING: FOR THE FIRST TIME, HUNTING AND FISHING LICENSE APPLICATIONS IN WEST VIRGINIA WILL NOW INCLUDE THE OPTION TO REGISTER AS AN ORGAN DONOR. THIS NOTEWORTHY INCLUSION IS THE RESULT OF A COMBINED EFFORT BY CORE, DONATE LIFE WEST VIRGINIA, THE WEST VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND THE OFFICE OF GOVERNOR JIM JUSTICE TO PUSH FORWARD LEGISLATION ALLOWING HUNTERS AND FISHERS IN WEST VIRGINIA TO SIGN UP AS ORGAN DONORS WHILE RECEIVING THEIR ANNUAL OR LIFETIME LICENSES. WEST VIRGINIA IS ONE OF THE FIRST STATES IN THE NATION TO PROVIDE AN ORGAN DONATION REGISTRATION OPTION IN THE HUNTING AND FISHING LICENSING PROCESS.2019 RECORD YEAR: BECAUSE OF A COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE AND INNOVATION, AND SOLID PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE NEARLY 150 DONOR HOSPITALS AND SEVEN TRANSPLANT CENTERS THAT CORE SERVES, 2019 WAS A RECORD-BREAKING YEAR FOR SAVING AND HEALING LIVES IN WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA AND WEST VIRGINIA THROUGH ORGAN, TISSUE AND CORNEA DONATION. SPECIFICALLY, CORE MADE POSSIBLE 661 LIFE-SAVING ORGAN TRANSPLANTS IN 2019 - AN INCREASE OF NEARLY 10 PERCENT OVER 2018 - BECAUSE OF THE GENEROSITY OF 253 ORGAN DONORS, NEARLY 20 PERCENT MORE DONORS THAN IN THE PREVIOUS YEAR. ALSO, A MORE THAN FOUR PERCENT INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF TISSUE AND CORNEA DONORS MEANS HEALING AND RESTORED SIGHT TO MORE THAN 80,000 PEOPLE WORLDWIDE. IN 2019, CORE ALSO MAINTAINED PERFORMANCE AMONG THE TOP 10% OF THE NATION'S 58 ORGAN PROCUREMENT ORGANIZATIONS.
