VISITOR EXPERIENCE & INTERPRETATION: THE FRICK PITTSBURGH IS ONE OF SOUTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA'S MOST DISTINCT MUSEUMS, COMBINING IN ONE LOCATION FINE AND DECORATIVE ARTS AS WELL AS HISTORIC OBJECTS INCLUDING BUILDINGS, GROUNDS AND GARDENS THAT TELL THE STORY OF PITTSBURGH'S RISE TO PROMINENCE DURING THE LATE 19TH- AND EARLY 20TH-CENTURIES. THROUGH ITS COLLECTIONS, THE PRESENTATION OF SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS AND A WIDE RANGE OF INNOVATIVE PROGRAMMING TO INCLUDE SCHOOL TOURS, WORKSHOPS, LECTURES, FILMS, CONCERTS AND MORE, THE FRICK CREATES MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS WITH EACH AND EVERY VISITOR BY PROVIDING CONTEMPORARY PERSPECTIVES ON THE SITE AND THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE FRICK FAMILY. CLAYTON, THE FRICK FAMILY HOME, HOSTED 16,100 VISITORS IN FISCAL YEAR 2020. THE FRICK ART MUSEUM SAW AN ATTENDANCE OF 38,300 TOTAL VISITORS WHO ENJOYED THE YEAR'S TOURING EXHIBITIONS AND BROWSING THE FRICK'S PERMANENT COLLECTION. ALSO IN FISCAL YEAR 2020, 32,900 VISITORS EXPLORED THE CAR AND CARRIAGE MUSEUM. THE FRICK ALSO CONTINUED ITS IMPORTANT WORK WITH STUDENTS, ENGAGING A TOTAL OF 10,200 TALENTED YOUTHS AND ADULTS IN SCHOOL TOURS, WORKSHOPS AND OTHER PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO ACCOMMODATE VARIOUS LEARNING STYLES. LASTLY, THE ANNUAL SUMMER FRIDAYS AT THE FRICK CONCERT SERIES ATTRACTED NEARLY 16,000 VISITORS TO THE SITE OVER A 10-WEEK PERIOD IN FISCAL YEAR 2020. THIS UNIQUE, FREE SUMMER PROGRAM SERIES IS A FEATURED ELEMENT OF THE FRICK'S COMMUNITY OUTREACH EFFORTS, OFFERING A VARIETY OF MUSICAL PERFORMANCES, ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES, AND OTHER ENTERTAINMENT APPEALING TO ALL AGES AND TASTES.
EXHIBITION & PRESERVATION: AT THE FRICK, VISITORS ENCOUNTER MULTIPLE TOUCHPOINTS WITH THE PERMANENT COLLECTION ACROSS OUR NEARLY SIX-ACRE SITE. STORYTELLING ALLOWS US TO PROVIDE OUR DIVERSE AUDIENCES WITH CONTEXTS FOR UNDERSTANDING THE PERMANENT COLLECTION AND LIFE IN THE GILDED AGE, PROVIDED THROUGH VARIOUS OUTLETS SUCH AS CLAYTON TOURS AND SPECIAL INSTALLATIONS AND EXHIBITIONS AT THE FRICK ART MUSEUM, THE CAR AND CARRIAGE MUSEUM AND THE HISTORIC GREENHOUSE. IN ADDITION TO THE TRADITIONAL LIFE IN THE GILDED AGE TOUR AT CLAYTON, THE FRICK OFFERED FOUR SPECIAL THEMED TOURS DURING FISCAL YEAR 2020, INCLUDING LIFE IN THE GILDED AGE: SPORT, LEISURE AND FUN, MEMORY AND MOURNING: DEATH IN THE GILDED AGE, A GILDED CHRISTMAS: HOLIDAY TRADITIONS AND MY DEAREST: LOVE AND COURTSHIP IN THE GILDED AGE. AT THE FRICK ART MUSEUM, AN INSTALLATION OF CHINESE PORCELAINS FROM THE COLLECTION WAS PLACED ON DISPLAY ALONG WITH FOUR TOURING EXHIBITIONS: STREET PHOTOGRAPHY TO SURREALISM: THE GOLDEN AGE OF PHOTOGRAPHY IN FRANCE, 1900-1945, A SPORTING VISION: THE PAUL MELLON COLLECTION OF BRITISH SPORTING ART FROM THE VIRGINIA MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, KATHARINE HEPBURN: DRESSED FOR STAGE AND SCREEN, AND MAKER AND MUSE: WOMEN AND TWENTIETH CENTURY ART JEWELRY. A SPECIAL FIVE-MONTH INSTALLATION OF SPORTING CARRIAGES TO CORRESPOND WITH THE ARTWORKS FEATURED IN A SPORTING VISION WAS ON DISPLAY IN THE CAR AND CARRIAGE MUSEUM IN THE HUNT FOR A SEAT: SPORTING CARRIAGES IN EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY. LASTLY, THE GREENHOUSE WAS OUTFITTED TO PRESENT TWO STUNNING INSTALLATIONS WITH FLORIOGRAPHY: THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS AND TRADITIONS IN HOLIDAY GREENERY. IN ADDITION TO THE CONTINUED CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF THE GROUNDS AND OUR PERMANENT COLLECTION OF ART AND HISTORICAL BUILDINGS, THE FOLLOWING ARE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CONSERVATION PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN THIS YEAR: COMPLETED MAJOR STRUCTURAL REPAIRS TO THE NORTHWEST PORCH AT CLAYTON; SERVICE AND TUNING OF WELTE ORCHESTRION; STABILIZATION OF C. 1890 BEST AND COMPANY GIRL'S DRESS AND JACKET; CLEANING OF C. 1890 MOURNING BLOUSE; THE REPAIR OF ONE OMNIBUS CARRIAGE WHEEL; CLEANING OF THE OUTING WAGON AND CHUBB PHAETON AND REUPHOLSTERING THE SEAT OF THE ALBANY CUTTER SLEIGH. SMALLER PROJECTS ARE IDENTIFIED ON A YEARLY BASIS AND ARE ACCOMPLISHED AS PART OF THE OPERATING BUDGET. LARGER PROJECTS FOR WHICH FUNDS MUST BE RAISED OR EAR MARKED ARE IDENTIFIED THROUGH AN ONGOING CAPITAL BUDGET PROCESS.
