Organizations Filed Purposes: MANCHESTER CRAFTSMEN'S GUILD (MCG) YOUTH & ARTS EDUCATES AND INSPIRES YOUTH THROUGH THE ARTS TO BECOME PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS. THE MISSION OF MCG JAZZ IS TO PRESERVE, PRESENT, AND PROMOTE JAZZ.

MCG JAZZ PRESENTED A SUCCESSFUL 33RD ANNUAL CONCERT SEASON DURING 2019-20 UNTIL THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HIT AND MCG JAZZ WAS FORCED TO SHUT DOWN THEIR ON-SITE FACILITIES. UP TO THAT POINT, MCG JAZZ'S CONCERT SEASON WAS SOLD AT 84 PERCENT CAPACITY. MCG JAZZ PRESENTED LIVE MUSIC TO 17,198 AUDIENCE MEMBERS AT MCG'S CONCERT HALL AND LOCAL ALLEGHENY COUNTY PARKS UNTIL THE PANDEMIC FORCED THE STATE AND COUNTRY INTO LOCKDOWN. IN RESPONSE TO THE VAST NUMBER OF MUSICIANS AND EDUCATORS LEFT UNEMPLOYED BY THE PANDEMIC, MCG JAZZ CREATED THE MCG JAZZ PERFORMANCE FUND. WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE OPPORTUNITY FUND AND LOCAL JAZZ PATRONS, THIS FUND WILL EVENTUALLY SUPPORT OVER 50 PITTSBURGH MUSICIANS IN THE COMING WEEKS AND MONTHS. THE MUSICIANS SELECTED FOR THE PROGRAM ARE GRANTED FUNDS TO EITHER COMPOSE NEW MUSIC OR CREATE NEW ARRANGEMENTS FOR AN ENSEMBLE OF REGIONAL MUSICIANS OF THEIR CHOOSING. MCG JAZZ ALSO WAS ABLE TO HOLD DIFFERENT LIVE AND IN-PERSON EVENTS, ALLOWING AN ACTUAL AUDIENCE TO SAFELY GATHER OUTSIDE. ONE WAS AS PART OF THE DRIVE-IN ARTS FESTIVAL, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CITY THEATRE PITTSBURGH. THE OTHER, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FORT WILLOW DEVELOPERS AND CON ALMA, WAS JAZZ AT BAY 41. THESE EVENTS ALLOWED HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE AND DOZENS OF MUSICIANS THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE PART IN THE IRREPLACEABLE AND INVALUABLE EXPERIENCE OF LIVE MUSICAL PERFORMANCE.ADDITIONALLY, MCG JAZZ PUBLISHED ITS FIRST BOOK "SPIRIT TO SPIRIT: A PORTRAIT OF PITTSBURGH JAZZ IN THE NEW CENTURY" IN THE LATTER HALF OF 2019. THIS BOOK MARKS MCG JAZZ'S INITIAL ENDEAVOR INTO THE PUBLISHING WORLD AND SIGNIFIES AN EXCITING MOMENT IN THE ORGANIZATION'S EVOLUTION. "SPIRIT TO SPIRIT" GIVES READERS AN INTIMATE LOOK AT THE MUSICIANS AND COMMUNITIES THAT COMPRISE PITTSBURGH'S JAZZ SCENE.

MCG YOUTH & ARTS' SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMMING YEAR SERVED 232 UNIQUE YOUTH THROUGH ITS FLAGSHIP AFTERSCHOOL APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING PROGRAM (ATP). SIGNIFICANTLY, 59 PERCENT OF ATP PARTICIPANTS WERE ACTIVE WITH THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES AND THEREFORE CONSIDERED AT-RISK. SURVEYS OF HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS WHO PARTICIPATED IN ATP AND REVIEWS OF GRADUATION RECORDS SHOW THAT 100 PERCENT OF PARTICIPANTS GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL ON TIME IN 2019, AND 98 PERCENT PLAN TO PURSUE HIGHER EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES.MCG YOUTH & ARTS WAS EXPERIENCING AN INCREASE IN ATP ENROLLMENT FOR THEIR SPRING 2020 TRIMESTER OF WHEN THE PANDEMIC HIT. THE CLOSURE OF SCHOOLS DUE TO COVID-19 PREVENTED STUDENTS FROM ATTENDING MCG YOUTH & ARTS PROGRAMS ON-SITE. ONCE IT WAS EVIDENT THE LOCKDOWN WOULD GO ON FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, MCG YOUTH & ARTS REALIZED THE SIGNIFICANT LEARNING LOSS THAT WOULD BURDEN THEIR STUDENTS, WHO IN MANY CASES ARE ALREADY CONSIDERED AN AT-RISK POPULATION. A STUDY CONDUCTED BY MCKINSEY & COMPANY FOUND THAT BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC AND SCHOOL CLOSURES, BLACK STUDENTS MAY FALL BEHIND ACADEMICALLY BY 10.3 MONTHS, HISPANIC STUDENTS BY 9.2 MONTHS, AND LOW-INCOME STUDENTS BY MORE THAN A YEAR. WITH THE PROVEN CONNECTION BETWEEN ARTS EDUCATION AND ACADEMIC SUCCESS IN MIND, MCG YOUTH & ARTS MADE IT A PRIORITY TO MOVE ITS PROGRAMMING TO AN ONLINE PLATFORM. ATP COURSES WERE OFFERED OVER ZOOM WITH MCG YOUTH & ARTS TEACHING ARTISTS TEACHING STUDENTS REMOTELY FROM THEIR HOMES. 62 STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THE VIRTUAL ATP PROGRAMMING WITH COURSES RANGING FROM "AVAILAILISM 101" TO "SHOW US WHAT YOU GOT", A CERAMICS COURSE. MCG YOUTH & ARTS ALSO CONTINUED TO OFFER ITS CAREER AND COLLEGE PLACEMENT PROGRAM THAT ASSISTS HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS WITH POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION PLANNING ONLINE WITH STUDENTS MEETING WITH MCG YOUTH & ARTS STAFF VIRTUALLY. ADDITIONALLY, MCG YOUTH & ARTS ENSURED ANNUAL EVENTS AND CELEBRATIONS OF STUDENT WORK WERE NOT CANCELED DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. MCG YOUTH & ARTS HOSTED ITS ANNUAL MCG INVITATIONAL VIRTUALLY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PITTSBURGH PUBLIC SCHOOLS. THIS YEAR'S INVITATIONAL FEATURED A VIRTUAL ART SHOWCASE WITH OVER 300 PIECES OF STUDENT WORK. NEARLY $300,000 IN THE FORM OF CASH PRIZES, FUNDED WORKSHOPS, AND COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS WERE AWARDED TO STUDENTS WHO ENTERED THE INVITATIONAL. THE MCGI ALL-CITY AWARDS PRESENTATION WAS STREAMED ONLINE TO RECOGNIZE SPONSORS, AWARDING INSTITUTIONS, AND AWARD-WINNING STUDENTS.
