THE NATIONAL AVIARY'S DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION AND FIELD RESEARCH CONTRIBUTED TO AND/OR PUBLISHED MEANINGFUL STUDIES INCLUDING (1) IN THE JOURNAL IBIS, A STUDY SUGGESTING SEX-SPECIFIC INFLUENCES OF SHALE GAS DEVELOPMENT ON GENE EXPRESSION THAT MAY AFFECT LONG-TERM POPULATION SURVIVAL AND FITNESS OF BIRDS; (2) A STUDY IN SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT, DEMONSTRATING THAT ANTHROPOGENIC HABITAT DEGRADATION CAN AFFECT THE MICROBIOME OF NESTLING BIRDS, PROVIDING EVIDENCE FOR YET ANOTHER MECHANISM BY WHICH RIPARIAN SONGBIRDS ARE IMPACTED BY STREAM ACIDIFICATION; AND (3) IN THE JOURNAL ORNITHOLOGY, A DESCRIPTION OF THE LITTLE-KNOWN, VERY HIGH-INTENSITY, POST-BREEDING MOLT OF FLIGHT FEATHERS BY WARBLERS OF EASTERN NORTH AMERICA. ADDITIONALLY, A NEW RESEARCH PROGRAM WAS EXTENDED TO DETERMINE HOW BIRDS DEPEND ON OLDER HARDWOOD RIPARIAN FORESTS IN THE SOUTHEASTERN US. INCLUDED IN THIS PROGRAM IS AN INTENSIVE SEARCH FOR PERHAPS THE MOST ICONIC NORTH AMERICAN BIRD - THE IVORY-BILLED WOODPECKER WITH A GOAL OF FINDING A NESTING PAIR OF IVORY-BILLS AND PROVIDING INCONTROVERTIBLE EVIDENCE OF THEIR SURVIVAL. THE NATIONAL AVIARY'S DIRECTOR OF CONSERVATION AND FIELD RESEARCH CONTINUES TO ASSIST IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEXT GENERATION OF CONSERVATIONISTS BY ADVISING GRADUATE STUDENTS AT DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS IN THEIR THESES AND DISSERTATION RESEARCH.
