Organizations Filed Purposes:
To attract international visitors to the Greater Pittsburgh Region with the intent of engaging them with individuals and organizations and retaining longstanding relationships with bilateral impact.
The Pittsburgh Council for International Visitors dba GlobalPittsburgh was in the midst of an active programming year during fiscal year 2019-2020 when in-person exchange programing was paused by the U.S. Department of State as of March 11, 2020 through the remainder of the fiscal year. As a result of the pause, 15 programs scheduled during the fiscal year were canceled, nine of which were International Visitor Leadership Program (IVP) projects. During the fiscal year, the organization designed and implemented 16 itineraries for 130 participants in the IVLP, including three itineraries focusing on each of the topics of energy, cybersecurity, and government accountability, in addition to projects examining promoting social change through the arts, city planning, and education in the digital age. The organization arranged programming for an additional 116 international emerging leaders participating in five federally or privately funded projects. More than 234 regional professionals met with their international peers during 116 meetings arranged by the organization. One hundred sixty-eight volunteer hosts participated in 76 dinners in their homes for 273 international guests. An estimated 570 globally-minded community members attended monthly First Thursdays events; 90 people attended the organizations 60th anniversary celebration; and an additional 60 community members attended two potluck dinners. The organization arranged 6,603 nights of homestays for 116 individual students, interns or professionals participating in training programs. The organization arranged 715 room nights that generated nearly $90,000 for regional hotels and more that $12,500 in local taxes. Seven American and two Vietnamese volunteers donated more than 1,000 hours of their time assisting GlobalPittsburgh staff at the organizations office and remotely.
