Provide childcare to children of single mothers (of low income) who work or go to school evenings, nights and/or weekends
During 2020 Along The Way provided childcare in the homes of 3 clients to a total of 6 children. Due to COVID-19 pandemic and the mandated closures of child care providers, Along The Way services were suspended from April - August, 2020. Additionally, pandemic-related scheduling changes in our clients work schedules also affected their service needs. The service hours provided to clients in 2020 (361) is not reflective of a typical year (pre-pandemic 3 year average, 2127 hours/year). Our objective is to allow low income single mothers to invest in their financial and family stability through work and/or educational attainment. This is significant because in the US, 41% of single mother families live in poverty. According to the National Women's Law Center (2019), women are disproportionately working low-wage jobs with nonstandard hours and inconsistent schedules, making the lack of child care during nights and weekends when our client population needs to work, one of the biggest obstacles to obtaining economic self-sufficiency. By completely shouldering the cost burden of child care during these times, we provide our clients one critical support necessary to get out of poverty. We are the only organization that is meeting this need in our service area. Our core service is child care during non-traditional hours; however, we understand that this is one of the many components to getting out of poverty; therefore all of our clients also have access to the following: legal consultations, parenting support, mentorship, employment referrals and case management. All services are provided free of charge.
