THE LEARNING YEAR BEGAN IN SEPTEMBER WITH AN EXTRAORDINARY EXPERIENCE WITH HARVARD PROFESSOR CORNEL WEST TO TALK ABOUT RACE AND RACE RELATIONS IN AMERICA. WHILE OUR NATION HAS MADE SIGNIFICANT ADVANCES OVER THE LAST CENTURY IT IS EVIDENT TO MANY THAT RACE STILL MATTERS. MODERATED BY YPO'S OWN DR. CHRIS HOWARD, PRESIDENT OF ROBERT MORRIS UNIVERSITY, THIS RACE MATTERS EVENT WAS AN INTIMATE DISCUSSION WHERE OUR GUESTS WERE WELCOMED BY PRESIDENT & CEO OF THE AUGUST WILSON AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER, JANIS BURLEY WILSON. MEMBERS ALSO HEARD THE INSPIRING PERSPECTIVE OF LARRY E. DAVIS, DIRECTOR, CENTER ON RACE AND SOCIAL PROBLEMS, CHAIR AT UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH, WHERE HE OFFERED HIS THOUGHTS ON THE CLIMATE FOR BLACKS IN PITTSBURGH BASED UPON HIS STUDY OF RACE AND RELATIONS IN THE REGION AND THE NATION AT LARGE.A SIMILARLY THEMED PROGRAM FOLLOWED IN OCTOBER, TITLED THE NUANCE OF HATE. NEARLY ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE 1ST ANNIVERSARY OF THE TREE OF LIFE SHOOTING, THIS EVENT EXPLORED UNCONSCIOUS BIAS, ITS ROOTS, ITS MANIFESTATIONS AND PROVIDED TOOLS FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL TO RECOGNIZE AND ALLEVIATE THEIR OWN BIASES. THIS EVENT SERVED AS A CALL TO ACTION FOR ALL MEMBERS TO LEARN A COMMON LANGUAGE IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO SAY SOMETHING IF THEY SEE SOMETHING.SPEAKERS: RABBI JEFFREY MYERS OF THE TREE OF LIFE CONGREGATION & DR. ELIZABETH HAINES FROM PROJECT IMPLICIT, INC.ADDITIONAL EVENTS INCLUDED A LOCAL LOOK AT UBER AND ITS TECHNOLOGIES, MEDICAL MARIJUANA FOR MEDICINAL PURPOSES, DISRUPTIVE IDEAS AND TECHNOLOGIES AND A BI-PARTISAN LOOK AT THE 2020 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION WITH DONNA BRAZILLE AND SEAN SPICER. UNFORTUNATELY RIGHT AFTER THIS EVENT, COVID -19 DISRUPTED THE BALANCE OF THE PLANNED LEARNING YEAR. THE CHAPTER ADAPTED TO THE CIRCUMSTANCES AND HOSTED A FEW VIRTUAL PROGRAMS THAT WERE SPECIFIC TO HOW THE STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA WAS RESPONDING TO THE PANDEMIC FROM A BUSINESS AND MEDICAL STANDPOINT.
