HEAD START/EARLY HEAD START OF YORK COUNTY: PROVIDES SERVICES FOR INCOME ELIGIBLE PRESCHOOL CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES THROUGHOUT YORK COUNTY. COMPREHENSIVE SERVICES PROVIDED INCLUDE NUTRITION, EDUCATION AND HEALTH INCLUDING VISION, HEARING, AND DENTAL SCREENINGS. FAMILY COACHES WORK WITH FAMILIES TO ENRICH THEIR PARTICIPATION AND TO HELP THEM UNDERSTAND THEIR CHILD'S DEVELOPMENT. HEAD START CLASSROOMS ARE LOCATED THROUGHOUT YORK CITY AND YORK COUNTY. HEAD START IS FUNDED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES AND THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA, THROUGH THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.

PRE-K COUNTS: UNDER A COOPERATIVE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF THE CITY OF YORK, PRE-K COUNTS IS DEDICATED TO MAKING HIGH QUALITY EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AVAILABLE TO YORK CITY FAMILIES. THE PROGRAM GOAL IS TO PREPARE CHILDREN IN READING AND MATH AND ALSO FOR PAYING ATTENTION, FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS, AND GETTING ALONG WITH OTHERS. LAST YEAR, 1,033 CHILDREN PARTICIPATED IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION PROGRAMS PROVIDED BY CPC.

WOMEN, INFANTS, AND CHILDREN (WIC): PROVIDES SUPPLEMENTAL FOODS AND NUTRITION EDUCATION FOR PREGNANT WOMEN, BREAST-FEEDING MOTHERS, MOTHERS WHO HAVE GIVEN BIRTH WITHIN THE LAST SIX MONTHS, AND CHILDREN UP TO FIVE YEARS OF AGE. THE PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM IS TO PREVENT AND REDUCE HEALTH AND DIETARY PROBLEMS DURING PREGNANCY AND THE EARLY GROWTH STAGES OF A CHILD'S DEVELOPMENT. TO QUALIFY AS A PARTICIPANT, CLIENTS MUST MEET WIC INCOME STANDARDS, BE AT A MEDICAL OR NUTRITIONAL RISK AS CERTIFIED BY A HEALTH PROFESSIONAL, AND LIVE (OR RECEIVE HEALTH CARE) IN YORK COUNTY. WIC IS FUNDED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, THROUGH THE PA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH. THIS PROGRAM SERVED 8,986 FAMILIES DURING THE YEAR.
