THE Y IS A LEADING VOICE ON HEALTH AND WELL-BEING. WE BRING FAMILIES CLOSER TOGETHER TO ENCOURAGE GOOD HEALTH AND FOSTER CONNECTIONS TO FITNESS, SPORTS, FUN AND SHARED INTERESTS. AS A RESULT OVER 3,000 ADULTS IN OUR COMMUNITY ARE RECEIVING THE SUPPORT GUIDANCE AND RESOURCES THEY NEED TO ACHIEVE GREATER HEALTH IN SPIRIT, MIND AND BODY. THIS IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT AS OUR NATION STRUGGLES WITH OBESITY, MENTAL HEALTH AND CHRONIC DISEASE CRISIS'S, FAMILIES STRUGGLE WITH WORK-LIFE BALANCE AND INDIVIDUALS SEARCH FOR PERSONAL FULFILLMENT. OUR PROGRAMS ARE ACCESSIBLE, AFFORDABLE AND OPEN TO ALL FAITHS, BACKGROUNDS, ABILITIES AND INCOME LEVELS. IN 2020 WE PROVIDED OVER $20,000 IN FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO PEOPLE WHO WOULD HAVE OTHERWISE FACED ECONOMIC BARRIERS TO MEMBERSHIP OR PROGRAM PARTICIPATION. THE ALEXANDRIA AREA YMCA INCLUDES A 3 LANE LAP POOL THAT IS WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE, WHIRLPOOL, INDOOR RUN-WALK TRACK, FULLY EQUIPPED WELLNESS CENTER WITH CARDIO AND WEIGHT TRAINING EQUIPMENT, TWO GROUP FITNESS SPACES, GYMNASIUM WITH BASKETBALL, VOLLEYBALL AND PICKLEBALL COURTS AND SUPERVISED CHILD WATCH TO THOSE WITH FAMILY MEMBERSHIPS.
YMCA CHILD CARE SERVES 180 CHILDREN EACH DAY AT TWO LOCATIONS IN OUR COMMUNITY. ALL CHILDREN MATTER IS AT THE HEART OF WHAT WE BELIEVE IS IMPORTANT. YMCA CHILD CARE'S EARLY LEARNING SUCCESS CURRICULUM IS DEVELOPED ACCORDING TO BEST PRACTICES AROUND EARLY LEARNING STANDARDS AND ALIGNS WITH PARENT AWARE'S QUALITY RATING AND IMPROVEMENT SYSTEM. EACH UNIT OF STUDY COVERS SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT, APPROACHES TO LEARNING, LANGUAGE AND LITERACY, CREATIVITY AND THE ARTS, COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT AND PHYSICAL AND MOTOR DEVELOPMENT, PROVIDING A FRAMEWORK FOR PLANNING ACTIVITIES AND EXPERIENCES THAT ARE INTENTIONAL AND PURPOSEFUL, AND BEST PREPARE YOUNG LEARNERS FOR KINDERGARTEN. IN 2020, OUR Y PROVIDED OVER $50,000 IN TUITION ASSISTANCE TO CHILDREN AND FAMILIES IN YMCA CHILD CARE WHO EXPERIENCED FINANCIAL OR OTHER HARDSHIPS DUE TO COVID-19.
OUR YMCA IS COMMITTED TO NURTURING THE POTENTIAL OF EVERY CHILD AND TEEN. WE BELIEVE THAT ALL KIDS DESERVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DISCOVER WHO THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY CAN ACHIEVE. THAT'S WHY WE HELP LEAD CHILDREN TO POSITIVE BEHAVIORS, BETTER HEALTH, AND EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. OUR YMCA PROGRAMS LIKE SWIMMING LESSONS, SUMMER DAY CAMP AND SCHOOL'S OUT DAY CAMP, OFFER A RANGE OF EXPERIENCES THAT ENRICH COGNITIVE, SOCIAL, PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL GROWTH. EXPENSES INCLUDE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES AND DIRECT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE THAT MAKE PARTICIPATION POSSIBLE FOR 100% OF THE YOUNG PEOPLE WE ENGAGE.
