Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE MISSION OF THE LAKES AREA HUMANE SOCIETY IS TO PROMOTE RESPONSIBLE CARE AND TRAINING FOR HOUSEHOLD PETS THROUGH EDUCATION AND PUBLIC AWARENESS, AND TO PROVIDE A SAFE AND SHELTER HAVEN FOR LOST AND ABANDONED ANIMALS PENDING PLACEMENT IN SUITABLE PERMANENT HOMES.
THE LAKES AREA HUMANE SOCIETY IS A VOLUNTARY MEMBERSHIP ORGANIZATION OF BUSINESSES AND INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE FORMED AN ALLIANCE FOR THE PURPOSE OF PROMOTING RESPONSIBLE PET CARE AND TO PROVIDE A SAFE AND SHELTERING ENVIRONMENT FOR LOST AND ABANDONED PETS IN ALEXANDRIA AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES.THE LAKES AREA HUMANE SOCIETY BELIEVES THAT THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR PETS AND THEIR HUMANS IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE CALIBER OF WORK THAT IS DONE BY THE ORGANIZATION. THUS, THE HUMANE SOCIETY HAS A DIRECT AND MAJOR IMPACT ON HOW PETS AND PEOPLE INTERACT IN THE ALEXANDRIA AND SURROUNDING AREAS.
DURING 2018, THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDED SHELTER TO 699 ANIMALS AND REUNITED 78 LOST PETS WITH THEIR OWNERS. PLACED 473 PETS IN NEW, PERMANENT HOMES OR TRANSFERRED TO RESCUE. EACH OF THESE ANIMALS WAS TESTED FOR SERIOUS DISEASES, VACCINATED AND SPAYED/NEUTERED BEFORE BEING ADOPTED. OFFERED ANIMAL BEHAVIOR COUNSELING AT NO CHARGE TO INDIVIDUALS STRUGGLING WITH NEGATIVE PET BEHAVIORS. IN ADDITION, 58 DOGS AND PUPPIES WERE TRAINED THROUGH OUR DOG OBEDIENCE PROGRAM. SHELTER STAFF PROVIDED 18 TOURS AND PRESENTATIONS TO CHILDRENS GROUPS. OVER 200 CHILDREN LEARNED ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING KIND TO ANIMALS, ANIMAL SAFETY, AND RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP AND ABOUT THE SHELTERS MANY SERVICES.
SPECIAL MEDICAL FUND: FOUR PETS/PET OWNERS WERE OFFERED ASSISTANCE TO COVER MEDICAL COSTS INCURRED WHEN THEIR PET REQUIRED EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE. THESE PET OWNERS WOULD HAVE HAD TO EITHER SURRENDER OR EUTHANIZE THEIR PETS WITHOUT THIS ASSISTANCE, AS THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO SHOULDER THE COSTS OF THE NECESSARY VETERINARY CARE ON THEIR OWN.
COMMUNITY SPAY PROJECT: LAHS OFFERED A SPECIAL LOW-COST/FREE SPAY/NEUTER PROGRAM FOR DOUGLAS COUNTY RESIDENTS, WHICH ALLOWED PET OWNERS WHO ARE UNABLE TO SHOULDER THE COSTS OF ALTERING THEIR PETS THROUGH A MOBILE SPAY CLINIC HOSTED AT THE SHELTER THAT IN 2018, WAS ABLE TO ALTER OVER 220 ANIMALS FOR PET OWNERS. SINCE THE PROGRAM'S INCEPTION IN 2006, NEARLY 5,520 ANIMALS HAVE BEEN SPAYED PREVENTING HUNDREDS OF UNWANTED KITTENS AND PUPPIES FROM BEING BORN.
