PROVIDING SYMPHONIC MUSIC

SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 1932, THE DSSO HAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE INTENSELY DEDICATED TO ENGAGING AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE WITH THE POWER OF MUSIC. IT CONTINUES TO STRENGTHEN OUR REGION THROUGH EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCES AND PROGRAMS THAT IMPACT OUR CREATIVITY, COLLABORATION AND ARTISTRY. THE DSSO CONTRIBUTES TO OUR REGION'S PRIDE AS WELL AS ITS SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. THE DSSO EMPLOYS OVER 70 PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS TO PRODUCE TEN MAINSTAGE PRODUCTIONS OF CLASSICAL AND POPULAR MUSIC AT THE DECC SYMPHONY HALL REACHING A COMBINED AUDIENCE OF OVER 15,000. IN ADDITION THE DSSO WORKS HARD TO BRING MUSIC OUT TO THE COMMUNITY BEYOND THE WALLS OF SYMPHONY HALL. SUMMER CONCERTS ARE PERFORMED IN THE DULUTH AREA AS WELL AS AT THE LUCIUS WOODS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER IN SOLON SPRINGS, WI. THE CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES PRESENTS CHAMBER MUSIC WITH MEMBERS OF THE DSSO AT THE DEPOT AND IN COMMUNITY LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT NORTHEASTERN MINNESOTA AND NORTHWESTERN WISCONSIN. COLLABORATIONS WITH OTHER ARTS ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS MATINEE MUSICALE, LYRIC OPERA OF THE NORTH, DULUTH PLAYHOUSE AND DULUTH ART INSTITUTE HELP TO ENGAGE ARTISTS FROM MULTIPLE DISCIPLINES TO ENRICH OUR COMMUNITY. THE DSSO MAINTAINS A VIBRANT VOLUNTEER SYMPHONY CHORUS OF OVER 150 PEOPLE PROVIDING FURTHER MUSICAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE TALENT OF OUR REGION. THE DSSO YOUTH ORCHESTRAS SERVE OVER 150 YOUTH FROM THROUGH OUT THE AREA. THE SINFONIA, CONCERT ORCHESTRA, YOUTH SYMPHONY AND PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE ARE LED BY TALENTED PROFESSIONAL MUSIC EDUCATORS AND ENGAGE THE YOUTH THROUGH WEEKLY REHEARSALS AND MULTIPLE PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES. THE YOUTH ENSEMBLES NOT ONLY PROVIDE IMPORTANT MUSICAL EDUCATION BENEFITTING THE ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT OF OUR YOUTH, BUT ALSO SERVE AS A GATEWAY FOR FUTURE MUSICIANS OF THE DSSO AND OTHER ORCHESTRAS AROUND THE COUNTRY. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IS PROVIDED SO ALL YOUTH MAY PARTICIPATE. THE DSSO ALSO SPONSORS YOUNG ARTIST AND YOUNG COMPOSER COMPETITIONS TO FURTHER ENHANCE MUSICAL EDUCATION. THE DSSO IS A CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION AND RELIES ON THE GENEROSITY OF THE COMMUNITY TO MAINTAIN THE HIGH LEVEL OF PROFESSIONAL SERVICES IT PROVIDES FOR THE REGION.
