THE MILLER-DWAN FOUNDATION IMPROVES THE HEALTH OF THE PEOPLE OF OUR REGION THROUGH THE CREATION OF IMPACTFUL COMMUNITY SOLUTIONS THAT OVERCOME BARRIERS. WE SUPPORT THE FUTURE AND THE LEGACY OF MILLER-DWAN MEDICAL CENTER, POLINSKY MEDICAL REHABILITATION CENTER, SOLVAY HOSPICE HOUSE, AMBERWING - CENTER FOR YOUTH & FAMILY WELL-BEING AND OTHER INITIATIVES FOR OUR REGION'S HEALTH. BY COMING TOGETHER WITH OTHERS WHO SHARE OUR VISION AND PASSION, WE ARE ABLE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF PEOPLE EVERY DAY.
TO PROVIDE SUPPORT TO HISTORIC MILLER-DWAN MEDICAL CENTER SPECIALTY HEALTHCARE PROGRAMS AND SERVICES AND FOR INNOVATIVE PROGRAMMING THROUGHOUT THE REGION.
THE MILLER-DWAN FOUNDATION IS COMMITTED TO RAISING AWARENESS OF IMPORTANT HEALTH CARE ISSUES BY PROVIDING PEOPLE WITH KNOWLEDGE AND TOOLS TO MOVE TOWARDS GREATER WELLNESS, TO MANAGE THEIR ILLNESS, AND TO UNDERSTAND OPTIONS AVAILABLE THROUGHOUT THE COURSE OF THEIR ILLNESS. IN 2018, SPECIAL ATTENTION WAS FOCUSED ON PROVIDER AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION RELATED TO END-OF-LIFE ISSUES, MENTAL HEALTH, AND SUICIDE PREVENTION. EACH YEAR THE FOUNDATION CREATES PUBLICATIONS AND RESOURCES WHICH ARE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED, HAS AN ONLINE PRESENCE AND ENGAGES THE MEDIA IN SHARING OUR MESSAGE. TOPIC AREAS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, HOSPICE AND END-OF-LIFE, MENTAL HEALTH, CANCER CARE AND SURVIVORSHIP, PHYSICAL REHABILITATION, AND BURN TREATMENT. THE FOUNDATION AWARDS GRANTS WITHIN THE MEDICAL MILIEU AND TO COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS SPECIFICALLY FOR THE PROVISION OF EDUCATION. EDUCATION GRANTS ARE FOCUSED ON PATIENT CARE, AS WELL AS PREVENTION AND SUPPORT.
AMBERWING - CENTER FOR YOUTH AND FAMILY WELL-BEING IS OWNED BY THE MILLER-DWAN FOUNDATION, WHO HAS CONTINUED RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE STEWARDSHIP OF THE HOME AND TREATMENT PROGRAM. AMBERWING CARES FOR PATIENTS FROM BIRTH TO 25, AND ENGAGES THE FAMILY THROUGHOUT THE TREATMENT PROCESS (APPROX. 1,200 PATIENTS). THE MILLER-DWAN FOUNDATION AND AMBERWING CONTINUE TO IDENTIFY AND IMPLEMENT WAYS TO OFFER SKILLS AND EDUCATION TO CHILDREN BEYOND THOSE ADMITTED TO THE AMBERWING PROGRAM. IN 2018, WE RAMPED UP THE TRAINING OF REGIONAL SCHOOL DISTRICT PERSONNEL TO USE DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY (DBT) SKILLS IN THE CLASSROOM. THREE REGIONAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS COMPLETED THE TRAINING PROGRAM AND ARE USING THE SKILLS WITH STUDENTS. TWO SCHOOLS HAVE COMPLETED A PORTION OF THE PROGRAM AND WILL BE FINISHED IN 2019. SINCE DBT SKILLS ARE EMOTION REGULATION AND MINDFULNESS SKILLS, THEY WILL BENEFIT THE ENTIRE STUDENT POPULATION, REGARDLESS IF A STUDENT HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH A MENTAL ILLNESS OR BEEN THROUGH A TREATMENT PROGRAM.AMBERWING ALSO HOUSES A FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER THAT PROVIDES SUPPORT AND INFORMATION FOR PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY (896 PHONE CALLS REQUESTING SERVICES OR MENTAL HEALTH INFORMATION, 39 WALK-INS LOOKING FOR REQUESTING SERVICES OF LOOKING FOR MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES, CONDUCTED 43 TOURS, AND PARTICIPATED IN 43 COMMUNITY EVENTS TO PROVIDE RESOURCES AND RAISE AWARENESS. IN ADDITION, 101 PARENTS, GUARDIANS, BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, AND INTERESTED COMMUNITY MEMBERS ATTENDED THE "FAMILY AND FRIENDS" DBT EDUCATION CLASSES. AMBERWING REPRESENTATIVES SERVE ON THE BOARDS OF DIRECTORS OF FIVE DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONS FOCUSED ON MENTAL HEALTH CARE AND STIGMA REDUCTION.) MILLER-DWAN FOUNDATION DOES NOT CHARGE RENT TO ESSENTIA HEALTH FOR USE OF THE FACILITY.
THE FOUNDATION SUPPORTS MEANINGFUL HEALTHCARE PROGRAMS ON THE MEDICAL CAMPUS AND IN THE COMMUNITY. GRANTS ARE MADE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO IMPROVE HEALTHCARE IN OUR REGION AND ARE PRIMARILY FOCUSED ON ADULT AND ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH, HOSPICE, PHYSICAL REHABILITATION, CANCER CARE, BURN CARE, SURGICAL SERVICES, AND END-OF-LIFE.
