SHERBURNE COUNTY AREA UNITED WAY'S MISSION STATEMENT: TO UNITE AND EMPOWER OUR COMMUNITIES IN BETTERING THE LIVES OF AT-RISK AND VULNERABLE YOUTH.
OUR ISSUE FOCUS IS TO STRENGTHEN AND EMPOWER VULNERABLE YOUTH. WE HAVE DIRECT PROGRAMMING THROUGH THE IEMPOWER YOUTH PROGRAM WHERE WE PROACTIVELY WORK WITH YOUTH GRADES K-8 TO EMPOWER THEM, BUILD THEIR SELF-CONFIDENCE AND SELF-RELIANCE AS WELL AS LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND FRIENDSHIPS. THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN IN EXISTENCE SINCE 2011 AND HAS GROWN FOR NINE YEARS. THE YOUTH ARE INTROVERTS/VULNERABLE AND ARE CHOSEN BY COUNSELORS/SOCIAL WORKERS TO JOIN THE PROGRAM SO THAT WE CAN HELP THEM FIND THEIR VOICES AND BUILD THEIR DECISION-MAKING SKILLS. THE FACILITATORS OF EACH GROUP ARE EDUCATORS FROM THE SCHOOLS IN OUR SERVICE AREA OF BIG LAKE, ELK RIVER, OTSEGO, PRINCETON AND ZIMMERMAN. THIS PAST YEAR WE SERVED 204 YOUTH!ANOTHER DIRECT IMPACT PROGRAM WE HAVE IS COMMUNITY CONNECT (PREVIOUSLY PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT) WHERE WE HAVE AN EVENT AT THE ELK RIVER HIGH SCHOOL ON MEA THURSDAY TO SERVE PEOPLE IN NEED. WE HAVE OVER 45 VENDORS WHO OFFER RESOURCES AND SERVICES AS WELL AS EDUCATION TO THE PARTICIPANTS, AND WE OFFER FREE PERSONAL HYGIENE PRODUCTS TO THEM. THIS YEAR WE HAD 220 PEOPLE ATTEND AND PEOPLE WERE VERY HAPPY WITH THE RESOURCES AND SERVICES. WE ARE ALSO WORKING TOWARD EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY ABOUT VULNERABLE YOUTH AND TRAFFICKING AS WE ARE PROACTIVE AND WANT TO PREVENT OUR YOUTH FROM BECOMING EXPLOITED. WE HAVE HAD THREE COMMUNITY "GATHERINGS" IN DIFFERENT SERVICE AREAS AND SPEAKERS HAVE TALKED ABOUT ADVERSE CHILD EXPERIENCES AS WELL AS SEX TRAFFICKING BY REGIONAL NAVIGATORS. WE ARE ALSO HOLDING A SERIES ON SEXTORTION, MALE TRAFFICKING, AND PREVENTION OF TRAFFICKING. WE HAVE PARTNERS THAT WORK WITH US ON THIS ISSUE AND THE COMMUNITY IS LEARNING AS WELL.
