THE MISSION OF UNITED WAY OF HASTINGS IS TO BUILD PARTNERSHIPS TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY. THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED BY WORKING TO ADVANCE THE COMMON GOOD BY FOCUSING ON EDUCATION, HEALTH AND WELLNESS, AND FINANCIAL STABILITY. THESE ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS FOR A GOOD LIFE - A QUALITY EDUCATION THAT LEADS TO A STABLE JOB, ENOUGH INCOME TO SUPPORT A FAMILY THROUGH RETIREMENT, AND GOOD HEALTH.
REGULAR ALLOCATIONS TO SUPPORT THE PROGRAMS OF AGENCIES AND ORGANIZATIONS IN THE HASTINGS AREA. ORGANIZATIONS AND PROGRAMS SUPPORTED IN 2020 INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING: 360 COMMUNITIES - LEWIS HOUSE (SHELTER FOR SEXUAL AND DOMESTIC ABUSE VICTIMS, EMOTIONAL SUPPORT, SAFETY PLANNING, REFERRALS TO COMMUNITY RESOURCES, AND HELP IN NAVIGATING THE COURT SYSTEM) BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA, NORTHERN STAR COUNCIL - YOUTH DEVELOPMENT/PREPARED FOR LIFE (PROVIDES YOUNG PEOPLE WITH THE KNOWLEDGE AND RESOURCES TO MAKE MORAL AND ETHICAL DECISIONS THROUGHOUT THEIR LIVES) DARTS - LEARNING BUDDIES (VOLUNTEER PROGRAM FOR SENIORS IN WHICH THEY HELP STUDENTS WITH READING, MATH, AND SCIENCE), MEMORY CAFE (PROVIDES OPPORTUNITY FOR SOCIAL INTERACTION AND ACTIVITIES FOR PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA OR COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENTS AND THEIR CAREGIVERS) DISTRICT 200 HASTINGS COMMUNITY EDUCATION - DISABILITIES PROGRAM (PROVIDES EQUITABLE AND ACCESSIBLE LIFELONG LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES TO INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES), YOUTH STEAM (PROVIDES YOUTH ENRICHMENT COURSES IN A VARIETY OF CATEGORIES, INCLUDING SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ARTS, AND MATH) FRIENDS OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER - EDUCATION, YOUTH, STEWARDSHIP (ENGAGES CITIZENS TO PROTECT, RESTORE, AND ENHANCE THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER AND ITS WATERSHED IN THE TWIN CITIES REGION) HASTINGS PRESCOTT AREA ARTS COUNCIL - SUMMER PROGRAM ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES FOR YOUTH HASTINGS MIDDLE SCHOOL - POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONS & SUPPORT (AIMS TO IMPROVE STUDENT ACADEMIC AND BEHAVIOR OUTCOMES WHILE ENSURING ALL STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS TO THE MOST EFFECTIVE AND ACCURATELY IMPLEMENTED INSTRUCTIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL PRACTICES) LEGAL ASSISTANCE OF DAKOTA COUNTY - LEGAL SERVICES FOR LOW-INCOME RESIDENTS, PRIMARILY IN THE AREA OF FAMILY LAW PROACT - JOB TRAINING, EMPLOYMENT, LIFE SKILL TRAINING, AND COMMUNITY INTEGRATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES SHEPHERD OF THE VALLEY LUTHERAN CHURCH - REDO FITNESS FOR YOUTH AND FAMILIES (WORKS TO HELP PEOPLE DEVELOP THEIR PHYSICAL HEALTH WHILE ALSO OFFERING THEM OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN ON THEIR OWN TIME ABOUT FAITH IN A SAFE, COMFORTABLE SPACE) RESPONSE & RECOVERY FUND - ESTABLISHED FUND TO HELP THOSE MOST IMPACTED BY THE PANDEMIC, WHICH RESULTED IN PROVIDING GROCERIES AND DELIVERY TO OLDER ADULTS WHOSE GROCERY DELIVERY SERVICE WAS SUSPENDED, PROVIDED TRANSPORTATION FUNDING TO STUDENTS TO MEET WITH THEIR THERAPISTS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL DURING DISTANCE LEARNING, AND PROVIDING IPADS TO TWO NURSING AND ASSISTED LIVING HOMES TO HELP OLDER ADULTS AND THOSE WITH DISABILITIES CONNECT WITH LOVED ONES
COMMUNITY INITIATIVE LIVE UNITED SCHOLARSHIP - YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP UNITED WAY 2-1-1 24/7 HELP LINE - FREE AND CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION AND REFERRALS FOR THOSE NEEDING HELP WITH FOOD, BILLS, RENT, MENTAL HEALTH, COVID-19 QUESTIONS, AND MORE
YOUTH SERVICES FOOD 4 KIDS - PROVIDES CHILDREN ELIGIBLE FOR FREE/REDUCED SCHOOL LUNCHES WITH BAGS OF KID-FRIENDLY FOOD TO HELP ENSURE THEY AND THEIR FAMILIES HAVE ENOUGH TO EAT OVER WEEKENDS. IN 2020, UNITED WAY OF HASTINGS PROVIDED APPROXIMATELY 4,700 BAGS OF FOOD TO STUDENTS, RESULTING IN OVER 9,400 MEALS. HELPING KIDS SUCCEED - A COMMUNITY-WIDE INITIATIVE THAT HELPS BUILD "WEBS OF SUPPORT" FOR YOUTH IN THE HASTINGS COMMUNITY. THESE "WEBS" CONSIST OF FIVE OR MORE ADULT "ANCHORS" WHO CARE FOR THE YOUTH'S WELLBEING, EXPECT MORE OF YOUNG PEOPLE THAN THEY EXPECT OF THEMSELVES, AND GUIDE YOUTH INTO ACHIEVING THOSE EXPECTATIONS. IN 2020, UNITED WAY OF HASTINGS DEVELOPED "WEB OF SUPPORT" VIDEOS TO CONNECT WITH YOUTH DURING THE PANDEMIC. COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS TWIN CITIES - COMMUNITY RESOURCES ARE BROUGHT INTO SCHOOLS TO EMPOWER SUCCESS FOR ALL STUDENTS BY REMOVING BARRIERS FOR VULNERABLE STUDENTS; HIRED A SCHOOL-BASED COORDINATOR TO PROVIDE ACADEMIC AND NON-ACADEMIC SUPPORT TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
