PAWSITIVE PERSPECTIVES ASSISTANCE DOGS' (PAWPADS) CHARITABLE MISSION CONSISTS OF TWO CONCURRENT ACTIVITIES/GOALS BASED ON BOTH THE OUTCOME AND THE PROCESS OF TRAINING ASSISTANCE DOGS: TO ENRICH THE LIVES OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES BY PROVIDING THEM WITH EXCEPTIONALLY SKILLED ASSISTANCE DOGS AND UTILIZE THE PROCESS OF TRAINING THE DOGS AS A THERAPEUTIC, EDUCATIONAL OR VOCATIONAL EXPERIENCE.
PAWPADS IS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION WHOSE MISSION IS TO FACILITATE THE POWER OF THE HUMAN-CANINE BOND, AND ENHANCE THE LIVES OF OTHERS, THROUGH THE PROCESS OF TRAINING ASSISTANCE DOGS AND THE OUTCOME OF PLACING THEM WITH PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. PAWPADS'INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS DEMONSTRATE A SYMBIOTIC APPROACH OF ADDRESSING MULTIPLE NEEDS WITHIN DIVERSE POPULATIONS INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, YOUTH AT-RISK, VETERANS, SCHOOL-CHILDREN, STUDENTS AT UWRF, AND PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. PARTICIPANTS IN OUR PROGRAMS DEVELOP LIFE-SKILLS SUCH AS EMOTIONAL REGULATIONS, SELF-CONTROL, COMMUNICATION SKILLS, AND EMPATHY THROUGH WORKING WITH PAWPADS DOGS. INTERNS IN OUR ADEPT PROGRAM ARE PROVIDED AN IN-DEPTH EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE ON THE TRAINING AND PLACEMENT OF ASSISTANCE DOGS. DURING THE FISCAL YEAR 2019-2020, PAWPADS: - SUCCESSFULLY PLACED 2 SERVICE DOGS WITH CHILDREN WITH PHYSICAL/MOBILITY DISABILITIES, 1 DIABETIC ALERT DOG, 1 SCHOOL RESOURCE DOG, AND 1 FACILITY (SENIOR RESOURCE DOG). THIS INCLUDED HOLDING A 2-WEEK PARTNER TRAINING CAMP. - CONTINUED TO FURTHER DEVELOP THE ASSSISTANCE DOG EDUCATION PROGRAM AND TRAINING (ADEPT) INTERNSHIP PROGRAM AT UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN - RIVER FALLS BY INCREASING THE NUMBER OF INTERNS AND THE NUMBER OF DOGS PARTICIPATING AND EXPANDING THE CURRICULUM. - AS PART OF THE ADEPT AMBASSADOR PROGRAM, FOUR INTERNS BEGAN PREPARATION TO HOST A NATIONAL INTERCOLLEGIATE SYMPOSIUM FOR OTHER PROGRAMS AND STUDENTS WHO ARE TRAINING SERVICE DOGS ON CAMPUSES AROUND THE COUNTRY. UNFORTUNATELY THOSE PLANS WERE CANCELLED DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. - THE INTERNS ALSO UNDERTOOK EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY OPPORTUNITIES BY SHARING INFORMATION ON ASSISTANCE DOGS AND THE LAWS TO BUSINESSES, SCHOOLS, SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC. - CONTINUED TO TRAIN AND PREPARE DOGS FOR PLACEMENT, INCLUDING SERVICE DOGS FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES, DIABETIC ALERT DOGS, AND FACILITY DOGS. - CONDUCTED A 2-DAY SCHOOL RESOURCE DOG WORKSHOP FOR ISD 194 TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATION AND A 3-DAY JUMP START TRAINING WORKSHOP FOR ADEPT INTERNS.
