THE ORONO FOUNDATION FOR EDUCATION (OFE) WORKS TO EMPOWER ALL STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE THEIR HIGHEST POTENTIAL AND TO ENSURE A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE BY HARNESSING THE COMMUNITY'S TIME, TALENT AND FINANCIAL RESOURCES IN SUPPORT OF ORONO SCHOOLS.THE OFE RELIES PRIMARILY ON VOLUNTEERS, NOT PAID STAFF, TO CARRY OUT ITS MISSION. BY KEEPING EXPENSES MINIMAL, THE GOAL IS TO MAXIMIZE THE AMOUNT OF GRANTS TO BE PAID OVER TO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.OFE'S EFFORTS ARE GUIDED BY A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MOU) BETWEEN THE OFE AND THE ORONO SCHOOL DISTRICT, WHICH WAS DRAFTED AND APPROVED IN 2016. THE MOU IDENTIFIES THE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF EACH PARTY AS THEY RELATE TO THE ONGOING FUNDRAISING AND PHILANTHROPY EFFORTS FOR THE ORONO SCHOOL DISTRICT AND COMMUNITY.THE FOUNDATION RAISES MONIES THROUGH VARIOUS FORMATS ALLOWING DONORS TO ALLOCATE MONEY TO THEIR CHOSEN FUND OF INTEREST. MONEY FROM THESE FUNDS IS THEN GRANTED TO THE SCHOOLS TO BE USED FOR EACH FUND'S INTENDED PURPOSE.
EMPOWER ALL STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE THEIR HIGHEST POTENTIAL AND ENSURE A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE.
EXCELLENCE FUNDS:OTHER TEMPORARY RESTRICTED FUNDS (IE: THE EXCELLENCE FUNDS), ARE FOR SPECIFIC USES BY THE SCHOOL AND THESE DONATIONS ARE GRANTED AS REQUESTED BY THE DISTRICT. EXCELLENCE FUNDS INCLUDE: ACADEMICS/LITERACY, CHARACTER, ARTS, ATHLETICS, BUILDING AND GROUNDS, LEADERSHIP AND ETHICS, TEACHER DEVELOPMENT, AND TECHNOLOGY. OTHER EXCELLENCE FUNDS MAY BE CREATED FROM TIME TO TIME AS DETERMINED BY THE OFE BOARD. LAST YEAR OFE GRANTED THE SCHOOLS $289,955 THROUGH ITS EXCELLENCE FUNDS.
ANNUAL FUND GRANT:THE FOUNDATION PROVIDES A GENERAL OPERATING GRANT TO THE ORONO SCHOOL DISTRICT EACH YEAR TO SUPPORT A WIDE VARIETY OF K-12 EDUCATIONAL EXPENSES. THE ORONO SCHOOL DISTRICT THEN ALLOCATES THESE DOLLARS TO KEY STRATEGIC PRIORITIES AND PRESSING BUDGETARY NEEDS. THIS YEAR THE FOUNDATION GRANTED THE SCHOOLS $175,000 THROUGH ITS ANNUAL FUND. IN RECENT YEARS, ANNUAL GRANTS HAVE BEEN UTILIZED BY THE SCHOOLS TO AID IN IMPLEMENTATION OF A NEW MATH CURRICULUM BY PAYING FOR TEACHER TRAINING AS WELL AS FUNDING A NEW MATH SPECIALIST POSITION. ANNUAL GRANT FUNDS HAVE ALSO BEEN USED FOR CLASSROOM MATERIALS, TECHNOLOGY, STAFF TRAINING AND SPECIAL STAFF POSITIONS.
ENDOWMENT FUND:OFE HAS ESTABLISHED AN ENDOWMENT FUND TO PROVIDE LONG-TERM SECURITY TO THE ORGANIZATION. OFE'S GOAL IS FOR THE ENDOWMENT TO MAINTAIN A BALANCE OF OVER $1,000,000. SINCE THE INCEPTION OF THE ENDOWMENT FUND, MEMBERS OF THE ORONO COMMUNITY HAVE CONTRIBUTED GENEROUSLY. DUE TO THESE DONATIONS AND STRONG MARKET RETURNS, THE ENDOWMENT FUND BALANCE AT THE END OF THIS FISCAL YEAR WAS $1,164,341. OFE MAY NOW CHOOSE TO DRAW A PERCENTAGE OF THESE EARNINGS TO PROVIDE ON-GOING, STRATEGIC FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO THE ORONO SCHOOL DISTRICT.
