Programming for New American Families In 2019, New American Families transitioned the focus a bit but are still serving immigrant and refugee women and their families, we are connecting them to resources to ensure basic needs are being met and empowering them towards self-determinacy. The New American Families Home-Visiting is early childhood focused in-home visiting program that works with parents to engage their children in developmental activities and preparing kids, ages 0-5, for kindergarten.New American Families utilizes the Parents as Teachers (PAT) evidence-based curriculum to assist families who have resettled in the United States and have children prenatal-5yrs. of age. These demographics are targeted due to the YWCA's mission of eliminating racism and empowering women understanding that not all have the privilege of access to information as it relates to the services we provide and our programmatic goals. Our Parent Educators typically identify with the cultures of those they serve having firsthand insight guiding their culturally sensitive approach. Additionally, it is our goal to provide services in the primary language of individuals served whenever possible as we recognize the value in terms of relationship building, honoring culture and heritage, and ensuring mutual understanding.PAT is a literacy-based curriculum which focuses on three essential components: Parent-Child Interaction, Development-Centered Parenting and Family Well-Being. Each of these components are woven into all individual and group meetings with families. The goals: - Improved child and health development - Reduced rates of child abuse and neglect - Increased school readiness - Increased parent involvement in children's care and education - Including families who have recently settled in the United States in building stronger communities by ensuring their families are thriving in a way that is equitable to those who are born in the United states and ensuring their children are safe and ready to learn upon entry into the traditional educational sector in the United States. In 2019, the YWCA served 51 people with Home Visiting; 26 children and 14 adults.
