CHILDREN 0 - 12 YEARS OF AGE AND PREGNANT WOMEN ARE GIVEN EXTENDED ORAL HYGIENE AND NUTRITION INSTRUCTION, PROVIDED WITH ORAL HYGIENE KITS AND FOLLOW UP CALLS TO THE HOME, AND TREATED FOR PREVENTIVE AND RESTORATIVE ORAL HEALTH NEEDS. OF THE 4,163 ENROLLED CHILDREN, 95% WERE ON PUBLIC ASSISTANCE, 1% HAD NO INSURANCE, 26% WERE HMONG, 19% WERE KAREN, AND 40% WERE OTHER MINORITIES (TOTAL = 85% MINORITY). PROGRAM EVALUATION INDICATES A SIGNIFICANT NEED FOR INCREASED DENTAL ACCESS TO THIS GROUP: MOST CHILDREN RECEIVED FOLLOW-UP RESTORATIVE CARE DURING 2020 THERE WERE 196 PREGNANT WOMEN ENROLLED IN THE PROGRAM IN 2020 91% OF PREGNANT MOTHERS WERE ON PUBLIC ASSISTANCE,6% WERE UNINSURED, 26% WERE HMONG, 13% WERE KAREN AND 47% WERE OTHER MINORITIES. ONE OF THE GOALS OF THIS PROGRAM IS TO TEACH IMMIGRANT AND MINORITY WOMEN THE IMPORTANCE OF ORAL HYGIENE AND REDUCE PERIODONTAL DISEASE, WHICH HAS BEEN LINKED TO EARLY LABOR AND LOW BIRTH-WEIGHT BABIES. IN 2008, AN ADDITIONAL OUTREACH FEATURE WAS ADDED TO THE PROGRAM WITH PRESENTATIONS GIVEN AT WIC CENTERS, EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION CENTERS, AND LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL TRAINING CLASSES FOR IMMIGRANTS. IN 2020, A TOTAL OF 130 CHILDREN, PARENTS, AND PREGNANT WOMEN ATTENDED ONE OF THESE OUTREACH PRESENTATIONS. ORAL HYGIENE INSTRUCTION WAS PROVIDED TO 196 CHILDREN AT 4 SCHOOLS, AND PREVENTIVE DENTAL SERVICES WERE PROVIDED TO 162 CHILDREN AT 4 SCHOOLS DURING THE 2020 PROGRAM. ONLY CHILDREN WHO RETURNED A POSITIVE CONSENT FORM WERE SEEN FOR PREVENTIVE SERVICES.PROGRAM STAFF PROVIDED WRITTEN REPORTS AND REFERRALS FOR 88 CHILDREN WHO HAD SUSPECTED CARIES OR OTHER DENTAL ISSUES AND MADE FOLLOW-UP PHONE CALLS IN THE APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE TO PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH DENTAL NEEDS.COMMUNITY DENTAL CARE IS PROVIDING INCREASED ACCESS TO DENTAL CARE FOR CHILDREN AGES 0-12 YEARS OLD AND PREGNANT MOTHERS THROUGH A PILOT MEDICAL/DENTAL INTEGRATION PROJECT.
