The mission of ArtStart is to inspire artistic creativity and illuminate the connections among people, ideas and the environment through engaging artists, children, families, and communities in quality arts education experiences.
The mission of ArtStart, founded in 1988, has remained constant over its 32-year history: to foster artistic creativity and illuminate the connections among people, ideas, and the environment. Our artists engage children, families, and communities in quality arts education experiences that investigate environmental and cultural themes and use recycled materials. We say we do our work at the intersection of where art, environmental stewardship, and culture come together which enables us to address social justice issues as they relate to our paradigm. ArtStart's 4 core programs are: 1.) ArtStart's ArtScraps, providing low-cost, recycled materials to families, professional and young artists and organizations to further our message of environmental stewardship through the arts; 2.) Adult and Youth Development that includes community workshops in librairies and with social service organizations, school residencies, and summer cultural arts camps to further our message of respect for our environment and honoring the arts of diverse cutures while employing artists from those cultures; 3.) EcoArts Fest, our annual festival bringing youth and families from underserved SPPS schools together to celebrate and honor artistic, bio, and cultural diversity together demonstrating care for all living things; and, 4.) ArtStart's ArtGallery, providing emerging and experienced artists with income from shows. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic beginning in March 2020, ArtStart's lost about 1/3 of our revenue given the majority of our work is done during the spring of the year in the community. Here is a synopsis of our losses from mid-March through the end of our fiscal year June 30, 2020. ArtStart's ArtScraps closed to the public losing $5,000 on average/month resulting in a total loss of $19,980. Adult and Youth development projects were all cancelled to include library workshops, $13,826 in lost revenue; school residencies, $39,000 in lost revenue; on-site birthday parties $2,000 in lost revenue; and summer camp refunds and vouchers for $16,500 in lost revenue totalling $71,326 in lost revenue. EcoArts Fest lost $10,000 in project revenue. Because we had no exhibits scheduled, ArtStart's ArtGallery lost no revenue. In a three and one-half month period we lost a total of $101,306 in earned income revenue. Beginning in April 2020 ArtStart managed to literally reinvent ourselves and provide employment for staff and our roster of artists through the following initiaitves: 1.) We took advantage of the PPP relief program, which kept the 5 staff employed. Per programs involving artists such as adult and youth programming, we trained our roster artists for 8 weeks with pay in how to use Zoom as a high quality arts instructional tool. As a result we were able to successfully meet our grant obligations by implementing 9 residencies virtually providing each child with a full compiment of art tools and materials to complete the art project with the teaching artist. We kept the majority of our summer camp families onboard by training them in the use of Zoom prior to implementing our summer camp. And, we lenghtened our summer camp to 4 weeks with participants receiving an art kit for each class which they attendeed virtually. To replace the ArtScraps revenue we sold ArtScraps materials on-line for curbside pick-up. We developed Creativity Kits with study guides linking academic subject matter and art. And, what has proved to be one of our greatest assets, we created a program entitled Studio A which has become an on-line virutal art class for small groups of youth and adults taught live by our roster artists providing continued revenue for artists and for the organization.
