THE CHICAGO AVENUE FIRE ARTS CENTER INSPIRES HANDS, HEARTS, AND MINDS BY ART FORMS PRODUCED BY HEAT, SPARK, OR FLAME.
EDUCATION: IN 2019, OUR EDUCATION PROGRAMS SERVED MORE THAN 700 ADULTS AND YOUTH OF VARYING BACKGROUNDS AND ABILITIES IN BLACKSMITHING, WELDING, METAL CASTING, GLASSWORKING, NEON, AND JEWELRY COURSES. THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS WITH SCHOOLS AND OTHER COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, WE EXTEND OUR REACH TO A DIVERSE ARRAY OF PARTICIPANTS, INCLUDING MANY WHO HAVE LIMITED ACCESS TO ARTS LEARNING EXPERIENCES. WE ALSO MAINTAINED LONG-TERM PROGRAMS WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF MN AND THE HENNEPIN COUNTY HOME SCHOOL TO PROVIDE PROGRAMS FOR THEIR CLIENTS AND STUDENTS. WE HAD AN ENGAGED CORPS OF VOLUNTEERS THAT ASSISTED US WITH SHOP MANAGEMENT, FABRICATION, AND ADMINISTRATIVE EFFORTS TO SUPPORT OUR EDUCATION PROGRAMMING AND GENERAL OPERATIONS. BENEFITED 700 PERSONS IN 2019.
PUBLIC ART: CAFAC SERVED AS A TRAINING AND FABRICATION FACILITY FOR FOUR PUBLIC ART PROJECTS THAT WERE COMPLETED IN 2019 AND ANOTHER FOUR THAT WERE STARTED, SUPPORTING ARTISTS THROUGHOUT THE CREATION OF THEIR WORKS. ONE MAJOR INSTALLATION WAS A DECORATIVE RAILING BDE MAKA SKA IN HONOR OF MAHPIYA WICASTA (CLOUD MAN) AND THE VILLAGE HE LED THAT THRIVED AND FARMED AT BDE MAKA SKA IN THE 1830S. TOGETHER WITH VICTIMS OF GUN VIOLENCE AND THEIR FAMILIES, WE LED THE CREATION OF FIVE ARTISTIC BENCHES AS PART OF THE ART IS MY WEAPON PROJECT. WE CONTINUE TO DEVELOP OUR ROLE AS CONDUIT BETWEEN EMERGING ARTISTS AND ORGANIZATIONS SEEKING LARGE-SCALE WORK, BY PROVIDING DESIGN EXPERTISE, FABRICATION FACILITIES, PROJECT MANAGEMENT, AND TRAINING FOR ARTISTS SEEKING TO BUILD THEIR PUBLIC ART PORTFOLIOS. BENEFITED 6 PERSONS IN 2019.
ARTIST ACCESS/DEVELOPMENT: IN 2019, WE CONTINUED TO SUPPORT A THRIVING LEARNING COMMUNITY OF ARTISTS THROUGH STUDIO ACCESS PROGRAMS. OUR CORE OF STUDIO RENTAL ARTISTS USED OUR FACILITY TO PRODUCE WORK FOR COMMISSION PROJECTS AND ART FAIRS, WHILE DOZENS OF ARTISTS PARTICIPATED IN OUR STUDIO PASS AT REDUCED COST PROGRAM, WHICH ALLOWS STUDENTS TO MOVE INTO WORKING INDEPENDENTLY. OUR GALLERY HOSTED REGULAR SHOWS OF WORK PRODUCED BY OUR STUDENTS, INSTRUCTORS, AND EMERGING AND ESTABLISHED ARTISTS WORKING IN FIRE ARTS MEDIUMS, AND WE HOSTED A HOLIDAY ART MARKET FEATURING 30 ARTISTS. WE HELD TWO OPEN HOUSE COMMUNITY EVENTS THAT DREW AN AVERAGE OF 130 ATTENDEES. WE ALSO SERVED AS A COMMISSION REFERRAL RESOURCE FOR ARTISTS, CONNECTING INDIVIDUALS NEEDING REPAIR, FABRICATION, AND DESIGN WORK TO OUR DIRECTORY OF LOCAL CRAFTSPEOPLE. BENEFITED 50 PERSONS IN 2019.
