Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE MISSION OF CYCLES FOR CHANGE IS TO BUILD A DIVERSE AND EMPOWERED COMMUNITY OF BICYCLISTS.
RETAIL AND OPEN SHOP: The Minneapolis Retail Shop sold new and used bicycles and bike parts, serviced bikes for a fee, and recycled scrap bikes. Open Shop and Grease Rag offered space and access to tools in the Minneapolis shop, enabling community members to fix their bicycles, with supervised help if needed. Grease Rag offered dedicated shop time for Femme, Trans, and Women-only. Access to space was on a sliding fee scale, but no one was turned away because of inability to pay.
LEARN-TO-RIDE: For persons who were not able to ride a bicycle, this program offered a chance to learn in a supportive and nonjudgmental environment. For many people, learning to ride a bike not only released them from dependence on public transportation, but also offered new health benefits. Classes were held in several locations in Minneapolis and St Paul, and participants hailed from all over the Twin Cities, with the majority identifying as female or persons of color.
