Organizations Filed Purposes: THE GREAT NORTHERN CELEBRATES OUR COLD, CREATIVE WINTERS THROUGH TEN DAYS OF DIVERSE PROGRAMMING THAT INVIGORATE MIND AND BODY. IN AN ERA OF CHANGING CLIMATE THAT THREATENS OUR SIGNATURE SEASON, WE SEEK TO CREATE COMMUNITY, INSPIRE ACTION, AND SHARE THE RESILIENT SPIRIT OF THE NORTH WITH THE WORLD. THE GREAT NORTHERN WILL: (I) PROMOTE PUBLIC HEALTH BY ENCOURAGING ACTIVE AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLES IN A COLD WEATHER CLIMATE; (II) HIGHLIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE AS AN EXISTENTIAL THREAT TO WINTER THROUGH PROGRAMMING THAT EXAMINES OUR WARMING CLIMATE THROUGH THE LENS OF ART, MUSIC, CONVERSATION, AND STORYTELLING; (III) IMPROVE THE SOCIAL WELFARE OF THE TWIN CITIES THROUGH INCREASED COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND CULTURAL EXPERIENCES DURING TYPICALLY ISOLATING MONTHS; AND (IV) DRIVE ECONOMIC GROWTH BY SHOWCASING THE WINTER SEASON AND ITS ROLE IN MAKING OUR REGION AN EXCEPTIONAL PLACE TO LIVE AND WORK YEAR AROUND. THE GREAT NORTHERN ALSO WILL FURTHER EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES THROUGH PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES.

THE GREAT NORTHERN CELEBRATES OUR COLD, CREATIVE WINTERS THROUGH TEN DAYS OF DIVERSE PROGRAMMING.

THE GREAT NORTHERN WILL COORDINATE AND PUBLISH A CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR THE FESTIVAL PERIOD THAT HIGHLIGHTS HAPPENINGS AMONG PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS AND EVENTS AROUND THE TWIN CITIES THAT ARE IN FURTHERANCE OF THE GREAT NORTHERN'S EXEMPT PURPOSES. THE GREAT NORTHERN WILL HELP ENSURE SCHEDULING EFFICIENCIES FOR PARTNER EVENTS DURING THE FESTIVAL PERIOD. THE GREAT NORTHERN WILL USE SOCIAL MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS AND OTHER MEANS OF COMMUNICATION IN ADVANCE OF AND DURING THE FESTIVAL PERIOD TO NOTIFY THE PUBLIC OF UPCOMING EVENTS AND COMMUNICATE RELEVANT INFORMATION WITH RESPECT TO PARTNER EVENTS. WHILE THE GREAT NORTHERN MAY GENERALLY INCLUDE INFORMATION REGARDING FESTIVAL EVENTS CONDUCTED BY TAXABLE ENTITIES IN ITS CALENDAR OF EVENTS AND IN FESTIVAL MATERIALS, THE GREAT NORTHERN WILL NOT PROVIDE ANY TANGIBLE OR DIRECT FINANCIAL BENEFITS TO THESE ORGANIZATIONS. FOR EXAMPLE, THE GREAT NORTHERN WILL INCLUDE THE U.S. POND HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS (A TAXABLE ENTITY) IN ITS CALENDAR OF EVENTS AND MATERIALS BECAUSE THE EVENTS CONDUCTED BY U.S. POND HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE RELATED TO FURTHERING THE EXEMPT PURPOSES OF THE GREAT NORTHERN'S FESTIVAL AND THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR SPECTATORS, BUT THE GREAT NORTHERN WILL NOT PROVIDE ADMINISTRATIVE, MARKETING, ADVERTISING, OR FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO U.S. POND HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS. THE SAME WILL BE TRUE FOR ANY OTHER TAXABLE EVENTS, ACTIVITIES, OR ORGANIZATIONS INCLUDED IN THE GREAT NORTHERN'S FESTIVAL AND OTHER PROGRAMS.

THE GREAT NORTHERN WILL ALSO BE ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN DEVELOPING AND COORDINATING CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING RELATED TO THE FESTIVAL'S EXEMPT PURPOSES. DURING ITS 2020 FISCAL YEAR, THE GREAT NORTHERN SUPPORTED ITS FOUNDING PARTNERS PRIMARILY THROUGH MARKETING AND PROMOTION OF THE 2020 FESTIVAL, WHICH SAW A COMBINED TOTAL ATTENDANCE OF ABOUT 300,000 ACROSS ALL EVENTS.IN 2020 THE GREAT NORTHERN ALSO BEGAN TRANSITIONING TO A NEW MISSION AND PROGRAMMATIC VISION. IN DECEMBER 2019, THE GREAT NORTHERN HIRED KATE NORDSTRUM AS EXECUTIVE AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR TO LEAD THE ORGANIZATION INTO A NEW FUTURE THAT PRESENTS DIVERSE, ORIGINAL PROGRAMMING TO INVIGORATE THE MIND AND BODY, CREATE COMMUNITY, AND SHARE THE RESILIENT SPIRIT OF THE NORTH WITH THE WORLD. THE NEW PROGRAMMATIC VISION WILL INCLUDE PROGRAMMING IN MUSIC, ARTS, CULTURE, IDEAS, AND THE ENVIRONMENT, PRESENTED IN COLLABORATION WITH A RANGE OF PARTNERS TO HIGHLIGHT MINNESOTA'S DISTINCT WINTER CULTURE AND UNITE PEOPLE FROM AROUND THE REGION. BEGINNING IN JANUARY 2021, FUTURE FESTIVALS WILL INCLUDE MUSIC AND WORLD PREMIERES BY VISIONARY ARTISTS; PANEL DISCUSSIONS LED BY EXPERTS IN THE CLIMATE CHANGE FIELD; AND FOOD EVENTS, FILM, COMMISSIONED WRITING, STORYTELLING, AND SITE-SPECIFIC ART THAT CHANGES THE WAY WE SEE AND ENGAGE WITH THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE BROADER WORLD THAT WE SHARE.

THE THREE PRIMARY PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS RELY ON HUNDREDS OF COLLECTIVE VOLUNTEERS TO ENSURE THE SUCCESS OF THEIR RESPECTIVE PROGRAMMING, IN ADDITION TO VOLUNTEERS THAT WILL BE NEEDED FOR OTHER PARTNER EVENTS DURING THE FESTIVAL PERIOD. AS NEEDED, THE GREAT NORTHERN WILL IDENTIFY AND PROMOTE COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES DURING THE GREAT NORTHERN'S FESTIVAL PERIOD TO ENCOURAGE VOLUNTEERISM AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT.
