Organizations Filed Purposes:
Our mission is to integrate people across cultures and immigration histories, promoting tolerance and understanding among immigrants and their new communities through the art of storytelling.
Founded in 2013, GCV is a Minneapolis-based mixed-media, storytelling nonprofit that shares immigrant and refugee narratives in order to foster an understanding of the immigrant experience. Our storytelling mediums (books, video, podcast, exhibits) feature authentic, first-person accounts told BY the immigrants, acting as a counterweight to the negative rhetoric and prevailing stereotypes about the current wave of immigrants. By creating empathy for the immigrant experience, we generate a breakthrough in how immigrants are perceived and integrated, reducing bias and challenging the unjust norms that arise from systemic discrimination. Stories not only empower the teller, whose life experiences and unique contributions become valuable and validated through sharing, but they also educate the broader public and help us see how we all share the experience of being human.
Green Card Voices has been able to share personal immigrant narratives by: 1.Recording and Sharing First-Person Immigrant Life Stories Recorded over 450 life stories of immigrants coming from 140 different countries. The video narratives are shared via our website, YouTube, and social media. 2. Touring Exhibits 8 sets of exhibits with approx. 20 self-standing banners (each) featuring portraits of immigrants, their bio, a quote, and a QR code linked to their video (scannable with a smartphone). Shown in over 100 libraries, universities, and middle and high schools throughout MN (as well as ND, SD, WI and GA). 3. Live storytelling events - Over 100 events each year including: book readings, panel discussions, keynotes, all featuring our immigrant storytellers. 4. Publishing books featuring Immigrant Stories -"Green Card Youth Voices" award-winning book series. Each book is a collection of 30 personal essays written by immigrant high school students (Minneapolis, St. Paul, Fargo, Atlanta, Madison and Milwaukee editions).
