Ignite Afterschool (the Organization) is a non-profit organization founded in 2014 with a mission to unite Minnesota's afterschool community and strengthen afterschool programs through partnership, education, and advocacy. The purpose of the organization is to forge partnerships that create shared efforts across the afterschool field that close access gaps to afterschool and ensure professional development, resources and trainings across the state to improve program quality.
To unite Minnesota's afterschool community and strengthen afterschool programs through partnership, education and advocacy.
In 2020, Ignite Afterschool worked to be responsive to the needs of the afterschool and summer learning field in the wake of the Coronavirus Global Pandemic. We built new partnerships by joining the Minnesota Department of Education's Distance Learning Advisory Board, Co-facilitating two meetings of the Afterschool STEM Funders Network, Co-facilitating a "Race Equity in Education" work group that meets quarterly with the Commissioner of Education, and met regularly with relevant state agencies to stay abreast of changing safety guidance and executive orders and to advocate for the needs of afterschool and summer program providers. Ignite launched a weekly (by the end of 2020 a bi-monthly) MN Afterschool Connect virtual phone call that brought together afterschool stakeholders to hear timely updates on safety procedures and offered peer sharing space as programs shifted to virtual programming or launched new resources for young people and families. Ignite also launched a blog with monthly round-ups of Covid-19 resources and virtual professional development opportunities and a "Yes to Success" blog series that documented the ways in which schools and afterschool programs partnered to overcome pandemic barriers to meet young people's needs. Ignite re-designed our M3 continuous program improvement (CPI) process to work virtually and held a CPI kick-off with 92 participants. The organization launched a new CPI Planning Toolkit and "Single Data Set" reflection tool and held an additional 5 workshops on various CPI topics. Ignite led a project to explore how Minnesota's Targeted Services revenue source is used to support comprehensive afterschool opportunities and wrote a white paper offering recommendations for improvement. Lastly, Ignite joined the national Million Girl Moonshot Initiative and led efforts in Minnesota to ensure girls and young people of color have access to high quality STEM in afterschool opportunities.
