Organizations Filed Purposes: TO BUILD SOMALI WOMEN AND GIRL'S SOCIAL CONNECTEDNESS AND SELF-SUFFICIENCY SO THAT THEY LEAD HEALTHIER, AND MORE PRODUCTIVE LIVES IN MINNESOTA AND GLOBALLY.

FGC INNOVATION:IN 2019, ISUROON PROPOSED A CO-CREATION PROJECT WITH THE BUSH FOUNDATION TO ADDRESS THE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTHCARE DISPARITIES AMONG EAST AFRICAN WOMEN WITH FGC. THE OBJECTIVE WAS TO IDENTIFY CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE MEDICAL SOLUTIONS TO THE SYSTEMATIC DISPARITIES THAT AFFECT EAST AFRICAN WOMEN WITH FGC. THE PROJECT USED A COLLABORATIVE CO-CREATION PROCESS TO BRING TOGETHER DIFFERENT PARTIES TO PRODUCE A MUTUALLY VALUED OUTCOME. ACTIVITIES INCLUDED CREATING A STEERING COMMITTEE, SET-UP CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE COMMUNICATION, COLLECT CONTRIBUTIONS, IDENTIFY SCALABLE SOLUTIONS, AND BUILD COMPREHENSIVE SUPPORT FOR SYSTEMATIC CHANGE. ISUROON WORKED TO DEVELOP OROMO AND SOMALI WOMEN COMMITTEES AND CONDUCTED 20 GROUP MEETINGS.

ORR IDA:INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT ACCOUNTS (IDA) IS A GRANT FROM THE OFFICE OF REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT (ORR) WHICH FOCUSES ON WORKING WITH RECENT REFUGEES TO BUILD THEIR ASSETS THROUGH SAVINGS FOR A CAR, EDUCATION, OR BUSINESS INVESTMENT. THROUGH FINANCIAL LITERACY EDUCATION AND MATCHED SAVINGS, CLIENTS SAVE $2,000 OR $4,000 OVER A PRE-DETERMINED TIME AND IF REACHED, THE AMOUNT IS MATCHED AND THEY ARE ABLE TO CASH OUT TO MEET REACH THEIR GOALS. IN 2019, THIS PROGRAM SAW 47 FAMILIES ENROLLED AND 39 SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED. ABOUT 44 OF THESE CLIENTS WERE SAVING UP TO BUY A CAR AND 3 SAVED TOWARDS THEIR EDUCATION. ISUROON IS AN IDEAL PARTNER FOR THIS PROGRAM AS WE ARE A TRUSTED RESOURCE IN THE SOMALI REFUGEE COMMUNITY AND FAMILIES OFTEN REFER NEW REFUGEE ARRIVALS TO US.

EDUCATION:IN A COMMUNITY EFFORT WITH THE MCKNIGHT FOUNDATION, ISUROON CREATED AN EDUCATION DEPARTMENT TO WORK WITH SCHOOLS AND BETTER EQUIP THEM FOR SUPPORTING OUR SOMALI FAMILIES AND CHILDREN. WE HIRED COMMUNITY LIAISONS TO WORK IN TWO SCHOOLS WITH SUBSTANTIAL SOMALI STUDENT POPULATIONS ANNE SULLIVAN SCHOOL AND HIGHWOOD HILLS ELEMENTARY IN MINNEAPOLIS AND SAINT PAUL. THE LIAISONS ENGAGED SCHOOL FACULTY TO DEEPER UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY ALREADY KNEW AND WHAT THEY WANTED TO LEARN ABOUT THE SOMALI COMMUNITY. THEY ADVOCATED FOR ADVANCING EQUITY IN SCHOOLS AND TO DISTRIBUTE TEACHERS MORE ACCORDINGLY ACROSS SCHOOL DISTRICTS, AS WELL AS CONNECTING FAMILIES WITH THE RESOURCES TO LEAD PARENTS AND CHILDREN TO SUCCEED.
