MENTORING TRAINING AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE:THE MENTORING PARTNERSHIP OF MINNESOTA (MPM) DBA MENTOR MINNESOTA COUNTS ON 25 YEARS OF LEADING IN THE MENTORING MOVEMENT IN MINNESOTA TO ENSURE YOUTH AND MENTORS HAVE ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY MENTORING EXPERIENCES THROUGH A NETWORK OF NEARLY 200 MENTORING PROGRAMS. MPM FOCUSES ON BUILDING CAPACITY OF MENTORING PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT MINNESOTA THROUGH TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, CONSULTATION, AND TRAINING. HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE TRAINING AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FOR 2018 INCLUDE: BAGELS AND BEST PRACTICES AND OPEN OFFICE HOURS - A NO-COST OPPORTUNITY FOR MENTORING PROGRAM STAFF FROM DIFFERENT TYPES OF PROGRAMS, AT ALL LEVELS OF EXPERTISE, TO ATTEND AN OPEN SESSION FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN A FOCUS AREA OR TO RECEIVE FREE CONSULTATION FROM MPM STAFF AND TO ADDRESS CURRENT PROGRAM NEEDS. THESE OPPORTUNITIES ALLOW PROFESSIONALS TO COME TOGETHER AND LEARN MORE ABOUT THE NEEDS OF SPECIFIC POPULATIONS OF YOUTH THEY WORK WITH AND QUALITY PRACTICES, ALONG WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO REFLECT, SHARE EXPERIENCES, AND WALK AWAY WITH NEW SKILLS AND SUPPORT. CONTRACT TRAININGS - MPM PROVIDES CONTRACT TRAININGS TO A VARIETY OF AUDIENCES AND STAKEHOLDERS RELATED TO MENTORING BEST PRACTICES AND POSITIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PRINCIPLES; SUCH AS: MAXIMIZE YOUR IMPACT, WHICH FOCUSES ON HOW TO BE STRENGTHS BASED, YOUTH CENTERED, AND MODEL THINGS LIKE SELF-REGULATION AND SETTING BOUNDARIES FOR MENTEES; POSITIVE COMMUNICATION, WHICH FOCUSES ON ACTIVE LISTENING, BUILDING TRUST IN A MENTORING RELATIONSHIP, AND TOOLS FOR MODELING POSITIVE COMMUNICATION IN AN ENGAGING WAY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE; PEER-TO-PEER MENTORIN, WHICH FOCUSES ON THE ROLE OF A MENTOR, HEALTHY COMMUNICATION, AND TOOLS FOR BUILDING EFFECTIVE PEER-MENTORING RELATIONSHIPS WITH OLDER ADOLESCENTS OR COLLEGE-AGE MENTORS; AND MAXIMIZE YOUR AWARENESS, WHICH FOCUSES ON IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT, THE MANY DIMENSIONS OF CULTURE AND IDENTITY, AND OFFERS TIME TO REFLECT ON HOW IDENTITY AFFECTS EXPERIENCES WORKING WITH YOUTH.NATIONAL MENTORING RESOURCE CENTER (NMRC) - MPM IS THE MINNESOTA PROVIDER FOR NO-COST TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PROVIDED THROUGH THE NMRC. THE NATIONAL MENTORING RESOURCE CENTER, LAUNCHED IN NOVEMBER 2014, IS A COMPREHENSIVE AND RELIABLE RESOURCE FOR MENTORING TOOLS AND INFORMATION, AS WELL AS FREE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FOR MENTORING PROGRAMS. WE PROVIDE UP TO 50 HOURS OF CONSULTATION TO ELIGIBLE AND APPROVED MENTORING PROGRAMS. HUNDREDS OF HOURS OF TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE WERE PROVIDED IN 2018. SAMPLE PROJECTS IN 2018 INCLUDED MENTOR RETENTION ANALYSIS, MENTOR TRAINING REDESIGN, AND THE CREATION OF PROGRAM POLICIES AND PROCEDURES.
NATIONAL QUALITY MENTORING SYSTEM (NQMS):MPM HELPED CREATE AND NOW IMPLEMENTS THE NATIONAL QUALITY MENTORING SYSTEM (NQMS) PROCESS IN MINNESOTA. NQMS HELPS MENTORING PROGRAMS BRING THEIR PRACTICES INTO ALIGNMENT WITH THE BEST PRACTICES IN MENTORING, THE ELEMENTS OF EFFECTIVE PRACTICE. IT RESULTS IN A PUBLIC DESIGNATION THAT SIGNIFIES AN ORGANIZATION'S COMMITMENT TO ASSESSING THEIR PRACTICES AND OPERATING QUALITY PROGRAMMING. FAMILIES, VOLUNTEERS, AND FUNDERS CAN FEEL CONFIDENT ABOUT PARTICIPATING IN, AND SUPPORTING, A MENTORING PROGRAM THAT MEETS NATIONAL QUALITY STANDARDS. THE RESULT OF EACH ASSESSMENT IS AN IMPROVEMENT AND INNOVATION PLAN THAT CAN BE USED BY PROGRAMS TO BUILD QUALITY PRACTICES THAT ULTIMATELY HAVE A MORE POSITIVE EFFECT ON MENTORS AND MENTEES.
