The Minnesota Council on Foundations (MCF) works actively to expand and strengthen a vibrant regional community of diverse grantmakers who individually and collectively advance the common good.
MCF is a vibrant philanthropic community collectively advancing prosperity and equity.
Fellowship, MN Census & Special Projects:MCF special projects include activities that: prepare individuals from underrepresented communities for careers in philanthropy; advance democracy and civic participation; and promote impact investing as a philanthropic strategy. Specifically, 2019 was the concluding year of the Ron McKinley Philanthropy Fellows program, which provided employment, coaching, and support for people of color to establish career experience, knowledge and relationships in philanthropy. Also, in this year preceding the United States census count, the Minnesota Council on Foundations provided support to partner organizations to build infrastructure for census outreach and educate the community, in particular those in typically historically undercounted communities, about the importance of participation in the census. In addition, MCF's executive in residence program provided education, encouragement, and support to foundations in Minnesota to participate in impact investing, a strategy to commit a foundation's resources to investment vehicles which are aligned with mission and program goals in order to increase community impact.
Member Services:MCF conducts a wide range of training and professional development opportunities for grantmakers, and creates opportunities for peer learning within the field. Program topics include: grantmaker skills; topical grantmaking issues; issue-based networks; and member and community briefings. MCF's government relations and public policy program provides education, training and peer networks to its members, encouraging the incorporation of public policy and advocacy into grantmaking, in adherence with professional and legal practices. MCF responds to public policy issues related to the field of philanthropy, and advances public policy issues related to strengthening democracy.
Public Awareness:MCF educates the public, nonprofit organizations, the media, government and elected officials about philanthropy, trends in the field, and the grantmaking process. This occurs through the publication of a free Giving Forum magazine, MCF Notes, and the MCF Giving Memo, in addition to working directly with the media and public stakeholders.
