RESEARCH: MOCA IS A LEADER IN PRIVATE NONPROFIT FUNDING FOR OVARIAN CANCER RESEARCH. WE MANAGE A COMPETITIVE GRANT MAKING PROCESS EACH YEAR TO SELECT THE MOST IMPACTFUL PROJECTS TO FUND. RESEARCH PROPOSALS ARE REVIEWED BY BOTH NATIONAL SCIENTIFIC REVIEWERS WHO ARE EXPERTS IN THEIR FIELD AS WELL AS CONSUMER REVIEWERS WHO UNDERSTAND THE URGENCY OF FUNDING THAT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE PATIENT COMMUNITY. IN 2019, MOCA PROVIDED A TOTAL OF $680,000 TO OVARIAN CANCER RESEARCHERS. PATIENT & CAREGIVER SUPPORT: IN 2019, MOCA ORGANIZED AND HOSTED A WIDE RANGE OF EDUCATIONAL AND SUPPORT MEETINGS FOR WOMEN AND FAMILIES IMPACTED BY OVARIAN CANCER INCLUDING: TWO MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS, FOUR PUBLIC EDUCATION MEETINGS, TWO ONGOING MONTHLY SUPPORT GROUPS IN MINNEAPOLIS AND WOODBURY FOR WOMEN WITH OVARIAN CANCER AND THEIR LOVED ONES, 2 YOUNG SURVIVORS MEETINGS TO MEET THE UNIQUE NEEDS OF YOUNG WOMEN AND 2 MEN OF MOCA EVENTS. MOCA PROVIDES MEMBERS WITH CRITICAL ONE ON ONE SUPPORT AND OFFERS SUPPORT VIA PHONE, EMAIL AND IN PERSON AT OUR OFFICE 40 HOURS PER WEEK. MOCA'S WEBSITE PROVIDES RESOURCES, LINKS AND SURVIVOR STORIES AS WELL AS CURRENT RESEARCH DOLLARS AND INITIATIVES FUNDED BY MOCA. IN 2019, MOCA PROVIDED 54 WOMEN WITH MOCA CARES KITS. THE KITS ARE DESIGNED TO BRING COMFORT TO NEWLY DIAGNOSED OVARIAN CANCER SURVIVORS LIVING IN MINNESOTA OR GETTING THEIR TREATMENT IN MINNESOTA. MOCA AWARDED 9 DREAM AWARDS TOTALING $36,000 TO WOMEN WITH A DIAGNOSIS OF OVARIAN CANCER TO HELP THEM REALIZE THEIR DREAMS AND CREATE MEMORIES WITH THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS WHILE THEY ARE ABLE. MOCA ALSO AWARDED 2 TRAVEL AWARDS TOTALING $1,000 TO ENABLE MEMBERS TO TRAVEL TO CAMP MAK-A-DREAM IN 2019.
AWARENESS, OUTREACH AND INFORMATION: MOCA DROVE AWARENESS OF OVARIAN CANCER AND SUPPORT FOR SURVIVORS THROUGH VARIOUS PUBLIC EVENTS IN 2019 SUCH AS THE HOM TEAL STRIDES FOR OVARIAN CANCER (NEARLY 2,200 PARTICIPANTS), MOLLY CADE GOLF SCRAMBLE, BLACK, WHITE & TEAL GALA (520+ ATTENDEES), UNLEASH THE SHE RACE IN ROCHESTER, 35W BRIDGE AND LOWRY BRIDGE LIGHTINGS, 40 HEALTH FAIRS, EDUCATION EVENTS AND NUMEROUS THIRD PARTY EVENTS. MOCA REACHED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE AT AN INFORMATIONAL BOOTH ON THE CONCOURSE OF TWO MINNESOTA WILD HOCKEY GAMES IN 2019 AND AT OUR TIE IT TEAL WITH THE TWINS NIGHT AT TARGET FIELD. MOCA PLACED STORIES ABOUT OVARIAN CANCER ON ALL TV NETWORKS AND IN SEVERAL PRINT OUTLETS. MOCA HAS A STRONG MEDIA PRESENCE AND PRODUCES MONTHLY MOCA MESSENGER NEWSLETTERS VIA EMAIL. ALL OF THE EVENTS AND MEDIA STORIES INCLUDE INFORMATION ABOUT OVARIAN CANCER, ITS IMPACT ON FAMILIES AND THE COMMUNITY AND WAYS TO IMPROVE SURVIVAL. THIS PROGRAM INCLUDES $15,400 OF JOINT COSTS THAT WERE ALLOCATED FROM THE TEAL STRIDE EVENT.
