Organizations Filed Purposes:
The organization's primary purpose is exclusively for charitable purposes. The Minnesota Wisconsin Collie Rescue's mission is to provide quality shelter and care for surrendered, unwanted, neglected, and/or abused Collies until proper permanent homes can be found; to advise and educate potential and current Collie owners about breed characteristics, care, health issues, training and behavior; to advocate responsible Collie breeding practices; and to promote spaying and neutering of all pets.
Adoption of collies to qualified permanent homes. During 2020, MWCR Adoption Team volunteers reviewed adoption applications, checked references, visited the homes of potential adopters to meet the adopters and inspect their homes or did remote visits due to COVIC-19 restrictions, and when all criteria were successfully met, approved the applications to adopt from us. In 2020, MWCR adopted 40 collies to permanent homes, down from previous years due to the pandemic. The collies received all necessary veterinary care, including vaccinations and spaying or neutering, if needed, before being adopted. MWCR provided veterinary care for any conditions arising within the first thirty days after adoption and for any chronic conditions existing at the time of adoption. In many cases, our Transport Coordinator organized volunteers who provided transportation to the permanent homes. MWCR provided follow-up with adopters to ensure that the collie is adjusting to the new home and to answer questions that the adopters might have. Because of the pandemic, MWCR did not host several free Collie Frolics across the region that are normally held to encourage collie owners and their collies to get together, meet and visit with one another, and to provide our collies with the opportunity to play with each other.
Education and Outreach. MWCR strives to educate the public about collies and the advantages of pet adoption. MWCR partners with the Collie Rescue Foundation, the Collie Health Foundation, and the Pause 4 Paws organizations to promote responsible pet adoption and to promote strong working relationships among animal organizations. MWCR also collaborates with other local rescues and shelters, such as the Animal Humane Society, Red Lake Rosie's Rescue, the Minnesota Sheltie Rescue, HAWS, Animal Rescue League of Iowa, BENCHS, the Minnesota Aussie Rescue, Wisconsin Humane Society, and other rescues and shelters in our region to ensure the best placement of animals in need. We also partner with St. Paul Animal Control, Minneapolis Animal Control, MADACC, and PUPS to take in collies from impound situations. In 2020 we partnered with the Collie Rescue League of New England and sponsored two very ill collies taken in by the Rescue League from a large rescue situation. In 2016, MWCR joined the national Shelter Animals Count program to share data on animal intake and adoptions. In addition, during non-pandemic times, MWCR participates in numerous pet-related events during the year, such as the Great Lakes Pet Expo, the Pause 4 Paws adoption events, the Dog Days Westonka, Paws on Parade, the Walk Run Wag for MADACC Walk, and the Responsible Dog Ownership Day event as well as several dog park events to promote awareness of MWCR, to educate the public about collies and rescue organizations, and to promote pet adoptions. MWCR hosts an annual dinner meeting that includes an educational program for attendees. In 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, MWCR only hosted or participated in 7 events and fundraisers, including one in Wisconsin, one originating in Minnesota, and five multi-state events. During the two Give-to-the-Max and Giving Tuesday fundraisers, we encouraged donors to also support their local animal welfare agencies that were impacted by the pandemic. Our website (www.mwcr.org) contains educational materials for the public, and we routinely use our Facebook page, online newsletter, blog, and our email group to update people on dog-related health issues, food recalls, health alerts, training and behavioral issues, and other educational items. When needed, MWCR volunteers assist in the search for missing collies in our service area.
