Organizations Filed Purposes: North Country Food Alliance increases access to healthy foods and shares food with people in need. To that end, we rescue overstock food (mostly produce) and deliver it free of charge to local nonprofit organizations, build community gardens, and serve community meals.

North Country Food Alliance (NCFA) is dedicated to eliminating food waste, increasing access to fresh produce, and sharing food with people in need in the Twin Cities Metro. We rescue food (mostly fresh produce) that local businesses conventionally waste due to overstock and safely transport it to food shelves and shelters across the Metro Area. We educate and engage communities directly through our food donation gardens, in which folks from the neighborhood help tend to the plants and eat as much from the garden as they'd like for free. Any excess produce is delivered to local food shelves. We also have a community meals program, in which we partner with community kitchens to help provide hot meals to vulnerable populations.

The outreach and education program has over 40,000 conversations in the Twin Cities Metro raising awareness of commercial food waste. These conversations don't just affect people's view of the world but also drive fellow community members into action. Business owners, store managers, farmers, gardeners, and other people participate with the foodshare, community garden, and community meals program because of their contact with canvassers. In addition we find and start communication with local nonprofit workers that guide the focus of our work. Our other programs are informed by the outreach program. We educate our neighbors and they return in kind.

Foodshare: We partner with businesses metro wide including but not limited to: grocery stores, food co-ops, distributers, and food production facilities. We take the perishable food products such as fresh produce, meat, bread, dairy, that these businesses know they would have to waste without our help. Our workers ensure rapid and safe transportation of the food to be used by Twin Cities nonprofits every weekday. We give this food away completely free of charge to food shelves, shelters, and other nonprofits, allowing them to concentrate their resources where they are needed. Last year, we rescued 311,681 pounds of food and delivered it to 49 different groups that serve people who face food insecurity.

Community Garden: We plant gardens in neighborhoods with restricted access to fresh produce. These gardens give people the opportunity to learn how to grow their own healthy food and provide free produce to folks in the neighborhood. This year, we broke ground at a new community garden at a public housing site in South Minneapolis. This large garden site was stewarded by Youth Farm for decades. In 2019, Youth Farm discontinued their programs in South Minneapolis, and we were pleased to partner with the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority in order to continue to ensure the flourishing of this great space. We also manage a garden in North Minneapolis, which has grown to house 16 circular raised beds and 16 rectangular ones. This is the largest it's been since its founding in 2017.
