THE FIRST EVENT IN THIS SERIES WAS AN ONLINE STAGED READING OF "OPEN WATER," A PLAY BY PANGEA RESIDENT STAGE MANAGER SUZANNE VICTORIA CROSS. RACE: NORTH AND SOUTH ON THE GREAT RIVERPANGEA HAS CONTINUED OUR PROGRAM RACE: NORTH & SOUTH ON THE GREAT RIVER. WITHIN THIS PROGRAM IS THE MULTI-DISCIPLINARY PERFORMANCE PIECE RIVER SOLS WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY DIPANKAR MUKHERJEE AND CARLTON TURNER, DIRECTED BY MEENA NATARAJAN. IN JULY 2019 AND NOVEMBER 2019, CARLTON TURNER CAME TO MINNEAPOLIS FOR ONE-WEEK RESIDENCIES IN WHICH CARLTON TURNER, DIPANKAR MUKHERJEE, AND MEENA NATARAJAN INTENSIVELY WORKED ON RIVER SOLS. NATARAJAN AND MUKHERJEE TRAVELLED TO MISSISSIPPI IN EARLY NOVEMBER. WE COVERED A LOT OF GROUNDWORK ON THE SCRIPT DURING THIS TIME, ALLOWING OUR EXPERIENCES IN INDIA AND MISSISSIPPI TO INFLUENCE THE WRITING AND ALSO CREATING AN AESTHETIC STRUCTURE FOR RIVER SOLS. WE ALSO MET OVER ZOOM THROUGH FALL AND AFTER COVID. BECAUSE OF COVID, THEIR PLANNED RESIDENCY IN MISSISSIPPI FOR TWO WEEKS IN MARCH, A WEEK IN MAY AND IN NORTHERN MINNESOTA FOR A WEEK IN JULY TO COMPLETE THE SCRIPT FOR RIVER SOLS AND ADD ELEMENTS SUCH AS SOUND, ANIMATION AND OTHER DESIGN ELEMENTS GOT CANCELED. PANGEA HAD BOOKED THE PREMIERE OF RIVER SOLS AT ASIAN ARTS INITIATIVE IN PHILADELPHIA, AS WELL AS A SECOND PERFORMANCE AT IGNITE THEATER IN DALLAS, TEXAS, BUT UNFORTUNATELY UNDER COVID-19, WE NO LONGER KNOW WHEN THIS PREMIERE WILL OCCUR IN PERSON. INDIGENOUS VOICES NOVEMBER 2019, WE SUCCESSFULLY PRODUCED THE INDIGENOUS VOICES FESTIVAL, IN WHICH WE FULLY PRODUCED THE PLAY DON'T FEED THE INDIANS WRITTEN BY MURIELLE BORST TARRANT, PRESENTED THOMAS LABLANC'S ONE-MAN SHOW TATANKA ABOUT DAKOTA RESISTANCE TO COLONIZATION, PRESENTED TWO BROTHERS BY THE IKIDOWIN YOUTH ENSEMBLE, AND PRESENTED TWO STAGED READINGS OF WORK IN PROGRESS BY INDIGENOUS PLAYWRIGHTS CAROLYN DUNN AND SHARON DAY. DURING THE FESTIVAL WE ALSO COLLABORATED WITH THE NATIVE AMERICAN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE TO HOST A DISCUSSION REGARDING RACISM IN SPORTS, WHICH OCCURRED DAYS BEFORE THE WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM WAS TO PLAY IN MINNESOTA AND AS PART OF THE LEADUP TO THE PROTEST OF THEIR RACIST TEAM NAME LED BY INDIGENOUS ACTIVISTS. OVERALL, OUR FESTIVAL WAS WELL ATTENDED, AND WE WERE PROUD TO SEE MANY MEMBERS OF THE INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY ATTEND.
