COMMUNITY AND FARMER DEVELOPMENT:1) RTC COORDINATES EDUCATIONAL AND NETWORKING ACTIVITIES FOR BEGINNING FARMERS. WE MANAGE AND GROW THE FARMLAND ACCESS HUB, AN MULTI-STATE NETWORK OF ORGANIZATIONS WORKING COLLABORATIVELY ON FARMLAND ACCESS FOR BEGINNING FARMERS AND TRANSITIONS FOR RETIRING FARMERS. WE PROVIDE LITERACY TRAINING TO HELP PREPARE BEGINNING FARMERS TO ACQUIRE LAND AND PROVIDE INDIVIDUALIZED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE BY FARMLAND ACCESS NAVIGATORS TO BEGINNING FARMERS SEEKING LAND. WE ALSO SUPPORT EIGHT REGIONAL FARMERS MARKETS WHO ARE EXPANDING THEIR OPERATIONS THROUGH PRODUCT AGGREGATION AND SALES TO INDIVIDUALS CONSUMERS AND TO WHOLESALE AND INSTITUTIONAL BUYERS.
CONSERVATION:RTC OFFERS INDIVIDUALIZED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO SMALL AND MID-SIZED FARMERS AND FOOD BUSINESSES AND INSTITUTIONS WHO ARE INCORPORATING LOCAL FOODS INTO THEIR MENUS AND ONTO THEIR SHELVES. WE ALSO WORK TO DEVELOP SYSTEMS THAT SUPPORT A ROBUST LOCAL FOOD SYSTEM. AS CO-FOUNDER OF THE FEAST! NETWORK, WE HOST THE FEAST! LOCAL FOODS MARKETPLACE IN ROCHESTER, MN, A 2-DAY EXPO WITH NEARLY 1,500 IN ATTENDANCE THAT FEATURES OVER 100 FOOD, BEER, WINE, AND CIDER COMPANIES THAT ARE COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING LOCAL INGREDIENTS. WE WORK WITH FARMERS, PROCESSORS AND SPECIALTY FOOD MANUFACTURERS TO INCREASE THEIR USE OF LOCAL FARMS AND BOLSTER THE SUPPLY CHAIN FOR LOCAL FOOD IN OUR REGION.
LOCAL FOOD SYSTEMS:RTC SUPPORTS CHILDHOOD NUTRITION, DIVERSE INCOME STREAMS FOR LOCAL FARMERS, AND STRENGTHENED SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC NETWORKS VIA OUR FARM TO SCHOOL AND EARLY CARE PROGRAMMING. THROUGH TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND OUTREACH, OUR STAFF SUPPORTS EARLY CARE PROVIDERS, SCHOOL STAFF/ADMINISTRATION, FARMERS, AND OTHERS INVOLVED IN FOOD DISTRIBUTION NETWORKS TO UNDERSTAND HOW THEY CAN BEST BUILD CONNECTIONS BETWEEN CURRICULUM, MEALS AND SNACKS, FARMERS AND STUDENTS, AND HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN LIKE GARDENING THAT DEVELOP A STRONGER SENSE OF WHERE FOOD COMES FROM AND LIFELONG HEALTHY EATING HABITS.
