FOCP fulfills this mission primarily through the work of the BackPack Food Program (serving elementary students) and Power Pack Program (serving middle school students). These programs provide youth hunger relief on weekends and school breaks and collectively serve 1070 students each week at 29 schools within 5 school districts in the greater Mankato Area.
Feeding Our Communities Partners has a mission to engage our community in solving youth hunger. We envision a community in which hunger is not a barrier to success.
BackPack Food Program: The BackPack Food Program reduces weekend and extended school break hunger in elementary school children who live in food-insecure households by providing child-friendly, well-balanced single serving food items intended for breakfast, lunch, and snack to be consumed each day of the weekend or school break. The food packs are assembled by volunteers and then provided to school personnel who discreetly place them in the backpacks or lockers of enrolled children. When schools unexpectedly closed due to the recent pandemic, FOCP transitioned to a home delivery model, ensuring no interruption in services. The food packs/boxes also contain a suggested menu for consumption of meals, educational activities, and a list of additional community resources. Once a month, a milk voucher is also included which may be redeemed for a half gallon of milk at any Greater Mankato Kwik Trip location or select community grocery store. This program provided 173,840 meals to 820 students during the 2019-2020 school year.Power Pack Program: Power Pack addresses the complex needs of middle school students who may require an additional boost of nutrition and energy during the school day or before extra-curricular activities by supplying supplemental snacks. Power Pack also offers traditional two-day food packs to help alleviate hunger on weekends. Food items include a breakfast, lunch and snack meant for consumption each day of the weekend or extended school break. This program provided 53,000 meals to 250 students during the 2019-2020 school year.
Summer Pack Program: Recognizing that an estimated eighty percent of Minnesota youth who qualify for free and reduced lunch during the school year do not have access to meal programs during the summer months, FOCP has stepped in with attempts to fill the summer feeding gap, locally. In strides to eliminate barriers to access, a home-delivery process was devised. By partnering with several local stakeholders, FOCP hosted a summer feeding program pilot in June 2019. Each program participant received a monthly box containing four weekend food packs delivered directly to their doorsteps. The program continued in the summer of 2020 and expanded to serve additional youth. With this additional service, FOCP ultimately expanded as a year-round resource for youth hunger-relief.This program provided 61,360 meals to 767 students during July/August of 2019 and June of 2020.
